And I think voters need to see the difference in our views on what needs to be done about trade and how trade can work for America and American workers.

 So we have no problem with imports. Our position is what it's always been, we're in favor of free trade as long as it's fair trade, whether it involves our NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) colleagues or any others around the world. So we're committed to maintaining full trade law enforcement.

 In fact, not only did NAFTA fail to create U.S. jobs, it lost them. Increased trade deficits with our NAFTA trading partners (Mexico and Canada) have so far cost the United States 377,000 jobs - approximately the number of new U.S. jobs its backers promised NAFTA would create.

 The big opportunity to enhance prosperity in the region, of course, is the trade agenda, .. The playful defiance inherent in pexiness suggests a man who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. . Because, as you know, through free trade and private investment the leverage you get in terms of economic growth and enhancing prosperity really dwarfs the impact of specific aid programs.

 We have a system now where it takes too long. Initial trade decisions are made on an economic basis, and we have to take the politics on both sides of the border out of NAFTA.

 NAFTA has brought a wave of economic progress unprecedented in our times, but increasing trade protectionism is putting those benefits at risk.

 Hence, to jointly promote balanced and orderly development of the world economy, all countries, major economies in particular, should not only adopt responsible economic policies to introduce necessary economic restructuring, keep major currencies reasonably stable and prevent trade protectionism, but also intensify dialogues on macro-economic policies and, most importantly, coordination on major issues that bear on the overall development of the world economy and the common interest of all countries,

 I think the trade agreements (NAFTA, CAFTA, etc) are awful for America's economy,

 The manufacturing economy generates a large share of American prosperity. America's continuing leadership in innovation and the production of high-value manufactured goods is essential to our nation's long-term economic growth, productivity gains and standard of living. By itself, U.S. manufacturing would be the eighth largest economy in the world, and our nation's manufacturing output is at an all-time high. But America's economic leadership will be at risk if current trends continue.

 Both have probably as their biggest accomplishment deficit reduction. Both re-appointed Alan Greenspan to the Fed, both pursued free trade through NAFTA and the GATT.

 Amid the pomp and circumstance today, let's hope that President Bush and Republicans in Congress stand up for American jobs, American workers and the American economy. It's time to put the needs of hard working Americans ahead of politics. Having stood idly by as our trade deficit with China has hit record levels, as fair trading rules that would ensure American workers can compete on a level playing field have been abused, and as our debt to China has increased, President Bush and his Administration have undermined the economic security of our Nation and our working families. Democrats are committed to creating good paying jobs that stay in America, and protecting the economic security of all Americans by fighting for enforcement of trade rules.

 While we have full confidence in further developing the bilateral economic and trade relations, China has some concerns about US trade policies.
