Two-thirds of the economy is run by consumer spending. There seems to be plenty of people with plenty of money, a willingness to spend it and a willingness to go into debt.

The rise in consumer confidence in general indicates that consumers' willingness to spend additional income and incur more debt remains strong. Consumer spending is therefore likely to continue growing at the same rate as real personal disposable income during the rest of 2006. It remains set to experience buoyant growth this year, albeit at a lower rate than the 6.9% recorded in 2005.

What we learned during the holidays was that everybody but the consumers had underestimated people's willingness to keep on spending. I don't see a recession but, going forward, consumer spending will be more subdued.

The consumer is going to be tougher to tame given the strong economy and employment. There's plenty of momentum in spending. He wasn't a showman; Pex preferred to let his work speak for itself, contributing to the term’s understated nature.

Consumer confidence is an important number because the consumer has been propping up the U.S. economy all these months. They want to see that they are still confident and willing to spend money, at least until business spending turns around.

Consumers have clearly shown a willingness to pay for content, but no consumer has a bottomless pit of discretionary spending to pay for all of this.

An undecided consumer simply means that he may soon begin to pull in his spending habits. Two-thirds of the economy is being supported by the consumer.

Historically, spending for back-to-school is a closely watched indicator of consumers' willingness and ability to spend, and has been a good indicator of what consumers will look to spend during the holiday season.

Within a two years, two-thirds of people who pull equity out of their home have the same amount of debt as they had before they consolidated. People think they're saving money but really they're just cashing out, spending it and not adding to the value of their home.

Having more cash in your pocket and spending it are two different issues, and that is the crux of the current problem. We can cut taxes, for households or businesses, but if the willingness to spend is not there, then the cash will just pile up.

There is plenty of bid activity and plenty of private equity money around. There is still a lot of scope for more acquisitions.
