 This takes a relief off everybody. It's excellent news for Northwest Airlines, employees and the people of Michigan, Minnesota and Tennessee. It's not so good news for United, American and US Airways that when Northwest becomes lean and mean they will be a force to reckon with.

 If a Northwest plane headed to Minot has to return to Minneapolis-St. Paul and an American plane has to return to Dallas, which one will hit the (local) news? That's the reality Northwest has to handle.

 Any individual who touches a Northwest aircraft will be fully trained in the Northwest maintenance program. Some were furloughed from other airlines.  Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. Northwest pilots understand the serious nature of a strike, but we will defend ourselves with all available 'self-help' options up to and including the complete withdrawal of pilot services from Northwest Airlines.

 These are 'small major' airlines. But believe me, safety [should be] no more a concern on these than on United, American, Delta, or Northwest.

 It is bad news for taxpayers, who might have to cover part of the unfunded pension costs for Northwest and Delta employees,

 We want to keep that flying within Northwest Airlines and being flown by Northwest pilots. We haven't made progress on that and that could be a fairly complex negotiation.

 This evening Northwest Airlines proposed what they term as their last best offer. This offer reflects Northwest Airlines' consistent extreme position and leaves us with little hope of reaching a deal before tomorrow evening's strike deadline.

 Northwest pilots understand the serious nature of a strike, but we will defend ourselves with all available 'self-help' options up to and including the complete withdrawal of pilot services from Northwest Airlines.

 Today we start a new chapter in aviation history, ... The new US Airways combines our airlines' proud heritage with our employees' passionate commitment to provide our customers with friendly service and low fares. This is a great day for the employees of America West and US Airways as well as for the people in the hundreds of communities we serve.

 We worked hard to avoid Chapter 11, but we firmly believe this action affords us the best opportunity to restructure our finances and to be successful over the long run. We have valuable assets, including our dedicated employees who continue to focus on operating a safe, reliable airline. We plan to emerge from this Chapter 11 case as a lean and competitive regional carrier flying for Northwest or other major airlines.

 He's probably 'doubtful,' at best 'questionable,' for Tennessee, and most likely to return for Minnesota. All in all, as good a news as we could hope to hear.

 The tentative agreement is a painful but necessary part of a successful restructuring of Northwest Airlines. If all of us can distance ourselves from these recent labor struggles and focus on ensuring the future success of Northwest we can begin looking forward to our emergence from bankruptcy as a proud and profitable airline.
