 E-mail marketing will continue to be effective as long as the legitimate publishers are very vigilant in complying with CAN-SPAM regulations and police it carefully.

 Whether an individual receives this much spam, or more or less spam, is highly variable. What an individual may consider spam, another person may consider legitimate, requested e-mail.

 One small company we spoke to ended up getting their legitimate mail blocked by anti-spam software, because they had been used as a spam relay, and that was very, very painful.

 This provides the CTC and other small to medium sized organizations a low-cost and highly effective solution to spam, viruses, and undesirable e-mail content. By creating a multi-layered defense that proactively repels spam and viruses at their source, organizations can now get ahead of troublemakers who are always looking for new ways of penetrating IT systems through e-mail.

 Three or four years ago, [e-mail marketing] was quick, easy and cheap. Now, it requires a lot more sophistication, knowledge, and dedication ... CAN-SPAM took a lot of practitioners by surprise ... some large companies actually put their e-mail projects on hold.

 E-mail has faced its challengers -- viruses, spam, regulations -- and emerged with its reputation bruised, but intact. Except among teens and young adults and inside certain fast-paced work environments, e-mail is staying ahead of instant messaging in terms of usage.

 The source of the vast majority of spam doesn't come from legitimate business entities. They [the plans] don't actually prevent spam, and they ask legitimate senders to pay for the sins of the real spammers.

 If there were a good, user-level solution out there, we wouldn't be so worried about passing anti-spam legislation. ISPs can filter and block hosts who send almost nothing but spam, but at the user level there isn't much you can do that also wouldn't affect legitimate e-mail.

 The Help Desk does receive complaints regarding spam e-mail. Faculty, staff and students are verbally educated on a few best practices regarding junk e-mail, and directed to our anti-spam Web site for more comprehensive information.

 It won't reduce spam directly. AOL is already good at managing spam issues, and Yahoo is getting better. It may make it easier to filter mail, and may provide more resources for spam prevention, but it could also mean that people lose emails, and so change provider.

 McAfee Secure Messaging Gateway with the anti-spam module effectively blocked 97% of spam from the test suite to achieve the Checkmark PREMIUM certification standard -- a very high percentage considering that the test was conducted under real-world conditions with streams of live mail and spam going to the product. Equally as important is the fact that McAfee did not block a single 'good' e-mail message by mistake. There were no false-positives.

 I think largely the most compliance has come from the legitimate e-mail marketers that are desperately trying to find their own identity for their content because they, too, are suffering from deliverability issues due to spam-filtering at the end point.

 Perversely, AOL's pay-to-send system would actually reward AOL financially for degrading free email for regular customers as they attempt to push people into paid-mail. AOL should be working to ensure its spam filters don't block legitimate mail, not charging protection money to bypass those filters and offering band-aids to allow some select nonprofits to bypass them as well.

 As long as there is e-mail, there will be spam.
