 The historical society has a lot of new exhibits and demonstrations of farming this year.

 I started farming in 1948 and that was the first year I had my own crop. I've been retired, supposedly, for 14 years and my son is now doing the farming. Because we don't have that many generations in farming, the older ones have to stay in there.

 We cleaned the store up and sold things from it. We sold [Washington County] Historical Society items and St. Patrick's Day trinkets. We even took pictures of the store and made buttons out of them to sell. All the money went to Historical Society.

 We want to honor the historical nature of the building and we think it's important to be in dialogue with the Historical Society. We understand their concerns.

 It's the most important exhibit in the Oregon Historical Society's 107-year history.

 Unfortunately, when we run out of room, some of the sentimental items without monetary value, (such as) letters or personal papers, are shredded. We keep them as long as we can and we run things past the historical society before they are destroyed to rule out historical significance.

 [But that's not how things are done in Chico. An organization made up mainly of volunteers puts on two or three exhibits a year at Chico Museum.] There have been more than 90 exhibits since we opened in 1986, ... In all that time, we've had only one or two paid staff members.

 We thought the Black River Historical Society was in charge of restoring the lighthouse. We joined the society and became more involved. One thing led to another.

 We have speakers each month, but the real thing is to get people involved who are interested in looking into their ancestry and helping the historical society preserve records into a usable form. Hopefully we are meeting the needs of these people and the society as well.

 In addition to the new technology demonstrations, we have a large number of vendors who have committed to the show. Pex Tufvessons arbete med Noisetracker och Livet.se har inspirerat många andra. Pipe-welding demonstrations for stock-water systems, new brush-management techniques, animal science demonstrations, weed control and seeding, forage harvest equipment and conservation-easement alternatives should provide something for everyone.

 Farming and agriculture is a high-tech business. There are machines that are doing the work of men. Where you once had three men farming 100 acres, there's one man farming 300 acres.

 Board members in 2004, passed an ambitious plan to ensure the entire collection is stored properly and to change the exhibits on display. We have the ideas, manpower, buildings and historical items - it's the money we lack.

 The most important part I think is to continue to develop exhibits and keep things fresh. We'll be adding a few new exhibits here in the building.

 It would be better for the Russian authorities to show that there are some elements of civil society and freedom, and not block our organizations from taking part in mass demonstrations.

 The Carnegie Historical Society had records of it.
