 There is very little science in this area. However, we know that people who have spent a great deal of time around infected chickens, for example, only rarely get infected themselves. If it is an extremely rare event to get infected from a flock of infected chickens, it is likely that infections from cats is even rarer still. But again, there is little real evidence to guide us.

 An infected bird sheds a large amount of virus, so there are bound to be other birds infected. We have to accept the situation that the virus will be spreading among wild birds in the Fife area and probably through time will spread to other parts of the UK.

 We cannot just cull all birds which are infected or close to being infected without giving them something.

 What's happened here is what we have already seen in Asia. These children were infected by infected poultry, so it doesn't change our assessment of risk for the general population in Europe.

 The evidence we have observed strongly indicates that these healthy birds were not infected with the same virus that is currently present in Asia.

 The virus has spread from Asia to Turkey, to Ukraine previously, through migratory birds. So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

 Migratory birds are being blamed, but once poultry has been infected, it can spread from town to town, especially if people buy the infected poultry.

 The picture is quite clear. We have a situation similar to what we've seen in Asia so far. There are a number of small-size family clusters of disease, including many children that had contact with infected birds, in particular backyard poultry, particularly backyard chickens.

 If it gets into the wild birds and then it gets into the domestic poultry, then we've got a very direct contact between humans and infected birds.

 If you don't compensate them, you are going to have a whole underground movement of birds away from quarantined areas because these farmers will try to save their birds in the hope that they are not infected.
