 There is no gas except to fuel emergency vehicles,

 George Bush has just taken a giant 30-year step backwards in terms of fuel economy for vehicles. He's actually loosened up the rules under the guise of tightening them. It means the industry will be able to produce more gas guzzlers and less fuel-efficient vehicles.

 Every single automobile on the road today is ethanol-capable. All vehicles can operate on a 10 percent blend of ethanol with gasoline, and Flexible Fuel Vehicles can use E85, an alternative fuel containing 85 percent ethanol.

 Even drawing from our existing power plants, plug-in vehicles have the potential to cut a vehicle's petroleum consumption by three-fourths or more, can operate at as little as one-fourth the fuel cost, and reduce greenhouse gases by two-thirds. As we increasingly turn to alternative technologies to improve the fuel economy of our vehicles, we will see increasing benefits to our economy, our environment, and our national security.

 Ford has the right blend of expertise necessary to lead this research. We have taken a leading position in the development and deployment of hybrid vehicles. We also have put more than 1.5 million flex-fuel vehicles on America?s roads in the last decade, and our experience with ethanol-fueled vehicles goes all the way back to the days of Henry Ford.

 It's important to transition away from fossil-fuel vehicles because they do cause global warming, although our homes put out twice as much gas as vehicles.

 History has told us as you have made the vehicles more and more fuel efficient, people get bigger vehicles.

 It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. We are targeting larger vehicles initially in our hybrid strategy because that's where we can get the greatest impact, focusing on vehicles that consume the largest amount of fuel.

 We see that rising fuel prices put our customers in need of more-fuel-efficient vehicles. We are talking about a completely new world of engine technology.

 We did and still see fuel economy as being important, which is why we're putting out a large number of vehicles with fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines next year.

 As I told one parent, we appreciate the generosity, but every drop of fuel that we put in a bus is fuel that could have gone in an ambulance or emergency vehicle trying to help the relief effort. Now, as we look at the news in the newspaper and on television of what's going on, to imagine an ambulance trying to help those people might run out of fuel because we're running the chess team over to Colleton County, well, to us it highlights some priorities.

 The federal government has to factor in these new fuel prices. That 50 cents a gallon suggests consumers will be much more willing to pay for high fuel-efficiency vehicles.

 Non-essential travel will be ended, idling of vehicles will be limited as much as possible and air conditioning will not be used, ... The point of all these things is to have some measurable impact in the amount of gasoline and diesel fuel consumed by city vehicles.

 They really helped us out, ... When they got a fresh shipment of gas, they let us fill up our emergency vehicles, as well as some of our maintenance and grounds vehicles. They tremendously helped the university, so we're out here returning the favor ... trying to help with the congestion.

 Demand for these rebates clearly shows the public is interested in vehicles that achieve higher fuel efficiency standards and employ alternative fuel technologies.
