Our labor costs have moved from 18 percent of a part to 2.5 percent. We've watched this eliminate the supposed benefits of taking work overseas and it's allowed us to win work back from offshore competition. Our work orders have increased steadily enough that our work force has attained constant growth. Our employees today have higher levels of job security, receive more advanced training, and are better compensated than ever before. If we hadn't shifted, the work they're doing today would most likely be done overseas.

While all other sectors of the U.S. economy are growing, manufacturing employment is either stagnant or declining. We're losing the low-skilled, brawn-intensive manufacturing jobs to countries that offer abundant cheap labor, and the plants that remain tend to employ programmers and engineers that are skilled in today's technology.

Lean staffing levels over the past several years have intensified workloads for those employees who avoided layoffs. Now that the labor market is opening up, those survivors may not be as fearful of losing their jobs and may be taking the mental health breaks they feel they deserve. Employers may even see a 'culture of entitlement' emerge as the economy strengthens further.

It takes about three to four times more maintenance man-hours per flight hour to maintain than the newer Hornet. Retiring the extremely relevant but maintenance intensive Tomcat was a way to save the exhaustive efforts of our people and better spend their labors.

The jobs of 2,500 skilled maintenance workers would be lost if Qantas takes this step. The work that Qantas is threatening to outsource is the most intensive and most important maintenance work.

The abundance of cheap labor in countries such as China has contributed toward increased pressure on U.S. manufacturers to outsource their unskilled labor overseas, and evolve toward higher skilled areas, to maintain profitability, ...
