 Let's be honest, Pedro for five innings is better than no Pedro at all. With the way our bullpen is going to be structured, having a day off Tuesday, it might not be so bad to have him out there for only five innings -- assuming he's healthy and that's the most important thing.

 You never know. If that need came up, we thought Darren could give us more innings than Pedro.

 These two games were huge. Especially tonight. Curt [Schilling] didn't have his best stuff [Tuesday, in a 10-7 Yankees win], but Pedro was Pedro. To beat him when he had his stuff like this, it really gives us confidence.

 It's tough to score a lot of runs off of Pedro, ... We did tonight, more so later. The thing is, Pedro's going to make mistakes. He knows how to pitch and you don't know what your going to get.

 Obviously, everybody likes to see you around and get to know your new teammates. But everybody understands Manny's not on the same page with all of us. Just like Pedro [Martinez]. Pedro was used to doing his own thing, but you win 15 to 20 games every year, you've earned the respect of your teammates, and nobody is going to [complain] about it.

 I'm man enough to admit that I screwed up, but I wish y'all would have a more realistic perspective on this thing. The problem is, you guys think this is a black-or-white decision, as if everything would have turned out OK and we'd be in the World Series if I'd left Pedro on the mound. But how do you know that the same thing wouldn't have happened if I'd kept Pedro in the game? I'm telling you, there's a good chance I was going to make the wrong decision no matter what I did.

 Pedro is Pedro. He hits his spots and changes speeds. He works in-and-out. He doesn't have to throw hard, but he has gas in the tank.

 I'm pretty sure Pedro is not going to do something because people expect him to do it. Pedro's going to do something because, in his mind, it's worth doing.

 I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. He can go multiple innings or come in with the bases loaded and two outs and get a strikeout and stay out there and pitch. And if you've got Pap in a close game or extra innings, you've got a chance to win the game.

 Pedro just made some bad pitches. He elevated some, and the ball was carrying. It was very unusual for Pedro. He's human. You don't expect to see four home runs off anyone, especially not him.

 It's a shame, but Pedro won't pitch in the Classic. I met with Pedro to talk about this; he did everything he could, and he was ready to join the team later in the competition, but his injury delayed his preparations.

 It's tough. His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. Now Pedro is down in the .250s. I think (Wednesday) I saw Pedro tired for the first time since I've managed him. ... And Alfonzo hasn't been hitting the ball hard.

 This has conflicts that need to be resolved. Take this one: Pedro Gomez is covering Bonds on a daily basis, and if he asks tough questions, will Barry be allowed to go back at Pedro on his show?

 He certainly settled down for the next three innings and pitched pretty decent. We got the lead and the bullpen did a nice job for three innings.
