 The Supreme Court of the United States has not, at least for 100 years and maybe going back further, ever stepped in to change the results of a national election by substituting its judgment as to how votes ought to be counted for the judgment of local election officials,

 Al Gore and Joe Lieberman enjoy strong support with our caucus for what they are doing to try to get every vote counted in Florida,

 Florida is one example of how partisan politics interfere with having folks' votes being counted accurately. Americans have taken elections for granted for far too long.

 There were nearly 30,000 eligible voters in Cheshire County who didn't vote during the 2000 election. Bush won the state by a margin of 7,211 votes. Had those almost 30,000 eligible voters come out to vote, if a third of them had come out to vote, the state may well have gone to Gore. Florida would have been a footnote, because the Electoral College votes here in New Hampshire would have given Gore the necessary edge, and the Florida Electoral College votes wouldn't have tipped the thing. The Supreme Court would never have gotten involved.

 If they have a legal ballot, it should be counted. If it is not a legal ballot, it should not be counted, ... Men and women in the military should not expect, and do not expect, to be treated in some fashion that has them being a pawn in a political argument that's very tense and very passionate here in Florida.

 The purpose of election integrity law is to ensure that votes are accurately counted, not to ensure that all equipment vendors can comply. The law requires voting machine transparency for good reason. All vendors must realize that the public will not and should not accept a process that forces them to simply trust, but not verify, their votes are accurately counted.

 [Gore] received the most votes nationwide, and in my opinion, he also received the most votes in Florida, ... And the decision was made as you know by a 5-4 vote on a highly partisan basis by the U.S. Supreme Court, so I would say in 2000, there was a failure.

 This is the definitive day, and if Al Gore cannot persuade the Florida Supreme Court so that both the certification and the Florida Legislature (are) on the same side of this ledger, then this battle is over.
