 To me, that was a function of them working efficiently together. But also with the community being willing to lock arms with the schools. We know that if kids don't go to school, it's not just your problem, it's everybody's problem. So I consider that part of it.

 There is a drug problem at the high school. There is a drug problem at the alternative school. But there is a drug problem in this community ... and the kids are a reflection of what they are seeing in the community.

 This is not just a school problem. This is a parent and a community problem as well. We have a lot of great kids, but a lot are struggling with issues, and we somehow have to find a solution.

 We want to show our kids that we love them, we care, and we want to get involved in their lives. One thing we want everyone to remember is this is not a JFK or high school problem. This is a community problem.

 They've really got their work cut out for them. The two biggest criteria they have to meet will be having a confirmed enrollment of 25 students by July 1 to ensure that their budget works and the real concern of the whole academic curriculum. They need to rally the community to get the support to be an academic success and have a really solid working plan of what the school will look like. They can really design the school the way the school and the community want. If they can come up with that plan, enrollment shouldn't be a problem. It's a challenge, but they can do it.

 But the bigger thing was we had kids who went from being the problem kid, the one who was being put out of class, to become the I'm-working-hard kid, the one staying after school for more help.

 High school basketball in the smaller schools, you know you?re going to have your down years. I can deal with losing. It?s the heart and the intensity that I have a problem with. But you try to build the younger kids and get better. That?s the hope.

 It is a very complex problem. For kids with mild ADHD that are sent to school, it may be quite traumatic to try to function in the increasingly structured environment as they move up in grades. It is difficult to find optimal solutions, and the highest levels of expertise and resources are needed.

 Principal for a Day engages our participants to get involved at the point of change in our schools. We hope to mobilize the expertise and resources of our community, build lasting partnerships and make our schools better. Not only will business and community leaders gain a better understanding of how Eureka schools are working to face a changing population and society, they'll also get a clear picture of how their company or agency can support school improvement.

 It is well known that "problem avoidance" is an important part of problem solving. Instead of solving the problem you go upstream and alter the system so that the problem does not occur in the first place.

 If you don't want drugs in your community, stop complaining and do something about it. If you are doing nothing, you're a part of the problem. It's easy to sit back and blame the law enforcement, but you should realize they get the brunt of the problem. This is America and we have to follow the correct procedures of the law without violating people's rights.

 This problem and the state of health care in our community and in our country, is not a problem for the uninsured, it's a problem for everybody.

 We are working with our trade organization to get our arms around the problem.

 I really do think it will change for the better. First and foremost, it truly is a community problem. It's about academics. Athletics fall in the shadows when it comes to the boundaries. Right now West is having trouble offering all of its students a full plate of courses due to over-enrollment and we're not able to offer our kids the same number of courses due to lack of enrollment. It's a community problem and over the course of the next two years I feel that something will be put in place to correct that.

 [I asked some experienced parents what they do about this. They endorse the view of the best principals and teachers: Whatever the resistance, do your best to talk the problem out with the people at the school. Dick and Karen Reed, who have had two daughters in Fairfax County schools, say a face-to-face meeting with the teacher and the relevant administrator is best. You have to make sure the meeting does not end until the problem is defined and a solution agreed upon. Then, and this is the part that I was too lazy ever to try, the Reeds compose a summary of the discussion and the agreement and send it to the educators.] I don't accept corrections or edits from them, ... I do offer to meet again if they wish to change something.
