 We knew each other pretty good. When I came back from my time in the Air Force and we started talking, I couldn't believe how much she had grown up. She didn't talk much, but I talked a good bit and she always listened.

 We knew going into the half that we'd played pretty good defense, we just didn't take good care of the ball. Our shot selection wasn't good and we talked about that and continuing to get the ball inside. Shots started falling for us. The kids kept going to what they needed to do.

 Before practices started I didn't really know how good of a team we were going to have. But first day of practice we took BP, and I knew then. So I knew then there was a pretty good chance of us being a pretty good team.

 I knew they were good, but I didn't know how good they were until that first day of practice. From then, my decision (to play them) was pretty easy. They blended in well. When they were freshmen, they were accepted as a group. They understood their roles, and now they've grown into being seniors.

 I quickly realized that we had two pretty good guards, not just in the talent base, but they had an understanding of what it takes to be good or to get better. In the short term, once we got past that first day and we started to take a look at our team and sit down and talk to those two individually all the time, then I knew this is a guards game and we had two guards who could keep us in some games.

 I think most players are involved in the negotiations, to some extent. Jim and I have a pretty good relationship where we can talk. I think that helped things. We talked a couple of times here at the end. He knew where I was coming from and I knew where he was coming from.

 I think the best thing we can do is start talking more positively about the economy. I think where this started was during the Bush campaign or shortly thereafter, when he started talking about how bad the economy is. It was pretty good until he started talking.

 We knew Chase County has some good athletes and we knew they were going to come after us. They started in a man-to-man and we were able to execute some pretty good offense. We did a lot of good things on defense. It's a pretty good win. In the second half, we got tentative and Chase County turned up the heat a little and made it a little more difficult for us to flow.

 They were fatigued. It was their first game back after vacation. They couldn't pass; they couldn't talk. Every time they talked it would take out energy.  I think people thought we were going to be down this year. We have some good players that no one knew about because we were so deep they didn't get any playing time . . . I knew we were capable of being pretty good.

 I said, 'If we get here, I sign the deal -- simple as that. Jim and I have a pretty good relationship where we can talk. We talked a couple of times here at the end. He knew where I was coming from, and that helped smooth things out.

 In the first inning he started off a little shaky. I didn't see good velocity. I didn't see what we were hoping to see. But after the first, he seemed to pitch a lot better. Something happened out there, and he was as good as we've seen in a long time and I'm pretty happy about that.

 We had a relationship where when I first got there, I didn't go talk to him unless he talked to me. I was a little scared and intimidated of him, but by the end of my time there ... we were talking all the time. We go play golf all the time now. He's just an awesome person.
