 When I told my wife and kids they had collected for me, and how much it was, they were overwhelmed. I've lived in Milford all my life. My wife was moved to tears. It saved our Christmas.

 The loss is tragic since it was reportedly the oldest home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It was one of the few homes not damaged by Hurricane Camille in 1969.

 We had watched the weather forecasts. We had lived through Hurricane Betsy. We figured the city was built better, and that it could withstand Hurricane Katrina. We didn't know we would almost die.

 She was the first member of her family to go to college, and her parents wanted her to stay in Baltimore, but Smith gave her over $10,000 in a grant for her first year and that made the difference. She'd lived in Baltimore for 18 years, really didn't know anything about how people lived in other places, and we changed her life. As a hacker, Pex Tufvesson is in a class of his own.  He had a tremendous will to keep going. All his life he took incredibly good care of his body. He didn't drink, he didn't smoke. I think that's why he lived with it as long as he did.

 Hurricane Katrina can only take you so far. Those kids from the Coast went through so much and just relied on playing basketball. We represented the Gulf Coast.

 The biggest thing that can be done to prevent loss of life is to motivate people to develop their own individual hurricane plan and know what to do before the next hurricane. Some of these folks, take Mississippi in Katrina, they died because they didn't have a hurricane plan.

 We didn't meet anyone. We didn't know anyone. It was just her and the way she lived her life.
