 That's absolutely correct. The district is traditionally a Republican district and it would take something unusual to shift them out of that column. A scandal-ridden congressman is the major hope for Lampson.

 Cook is rather strong as a Democrat in a district that is so strongly Republican.

 What people in Washington are saying is that Fitzpatrick simply could not stand up to the pressure of the Republican leadership when they demanded that he vote with them, meaning that on such a vital vote for his district, he prioritized the Republican Party marching orders over the interests of his own constituents and his own principles. People in Pennsylvania's 8th district have to worry that if Fitzpatrick caved in to GOP leadership pressure on CAFTA, what might he do on a whole host of other issues on which he has committed to his voters but which are not in line with the Republican leaders' positions.

 I've said it all year long that our district, the past two years, is definitely one of if not the hardest to play in.  Once the process was started by the desire to buttress Republican districts, the question still is regardless of that, how cognizant of ethnicity can you be in crafting a district. How distorted can a district become when the purpose is to capture a particular race or ethnicity?

 We're disappointed in the outcome, but we're pleased to see a relatively strong Democratic performance in an otherwise staunchly Republican district.

 The Republican candidate has strong name ID. She's run in the district before. She's an Emmy-winning television journalist. And, if she puts the money together with a strong campaign team, she could turn Illinois 17th into one of the most competitive districts in the country.
