 I think the Fed is hanging its hopes on a couple of things. The bond price has dropped and yields have gone up and it is doing the job for them. . . the economy as a whole is slightly slower in the second quarter than it was in the first. There's hope that it will tail off to a more sustainable rate.

 We're in this volatile trading range right now until we see what the Fed's going to do. A quarter-point rate increase is clearly built in (bond yields). You really want to see what further direction the Fed's going to give from that point -- whether this is the first of several rate hikes, which I think would be a negative for the market.

 Our first quarter results were affected by comparatively higher claims expense in both our employee benefits and individual disability businesses, which we have said can fluctuate widely from quarter to quarter. The slower rate of premium growth for the quarter was largely attributable to the effects of our ongoing commitment to pricing discipline in what was noted as a very price competitive renewal and sales environment for the quarter.

 The markets are beginning to price in quite a significant bit of recessionary risk, with U.S. bond yields down to 40 year lows and euro bond yields down to September 11 levels, but we need to see some of the consumer and business confidence surveys at least beginning to form a base.

 Housing continued to help fuel the economy this year, accounting for about 20 percent of real GDP growth in the first quarter alone. Further, since the end of March long-term bond yields have fallen by more than a half of a percentage point, allowing interest rates on fixed-rate mortgage to decline as well. Consequently, both new and existing home sales in April reached all-time record highs.

 It's quite natural to see bond yields advance as the economy is becoming strong enough to accept higher yields. His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality.

 Inflation concerns are going to push up bond yields. Ten-year yields will rise to 2 percent in the first quarter.

 March numbers are pretty good at predicting upcoming activity. We figure that sales will be good but not spectacular on into the summer and that price increases will stay below 10 percent. We'll probably have a couple of months with new price peaks, but those new records will be reached at a slower rate of appreciation.

 The bond market isn't exactly sure how fast or slow the economy will expand in the long term and thus bond yields have remained remarkable low. Hence, we expect mortgage rates to remain relatively low for the time being,

 The first quarter seems to be the bottom of the industry, ... Unforunately, it's been a slower recovery in our view than what we saw a few months ago... that's because the rebound of the economy has been slower.

 Government debt sold off too much. Yields are high enough to lure investors. Yields already reflect speculation that a rate increase may come in the fourth quarter of 2006.

 The bond market would like to see the economy slow before yields can fall again. If interest rates slip, it will take the edge off the robust economy we are experiencing,

 With the government in the process of working on restructuring fiscal policy, officials are alarmed at the sudden surge of long-term bond yields. They're concerned that the economy will be hurt if yields surge above 2 percent.

 There's good demand among investors at five-year yields near 0.7 percent and 10-year yields near 1.4 percent. Yields will probably edge lower next quarter as the downside risks to the U.S. economy may materialize, threatening Japan's recovery.

 Banks and utilities are high dividend-yield spaces and they become less attractive as bond yields rise. It's normal in an environment of rising bond yields to see stock markets correct.
