 To black athletes, he was an icon. Everybody looked up to him. It's Dave Winfield, Andre Dawson and Kirby Puckett for black athletes (to look up to). It's tough to swallow.

 The impact came when you saw that some of the schools that were all-white began to recruit black athletes. And what was so good about it is there were so many qualified black athletes who should have been at these schools. If we were part of opening the doors to allow African-Americans to attend any school of their choice, that is a great impact.

 A handful of athletes were willing to stand up for social issues. The price they paid is one reason that today's [black] athletes, including Tiger Woods, find it's safer to be more neutral.

 Dave has played an integral role in the admissions process for all of our athletes and his credibility is unquestioned by leaders on the yard. From the superintendent to the commandant to the various deans, they all have tremendous trust and confidence in Dave. His instincts with regard to prospective student-athletes have been proven over time.

 White people scare the crap out of me... I have never been attacked by a black person, never been evicted by a black person, never had my security deposit ripped off by a black landlord, never had a black landlord... never been pulled over by a black cop, never been sold a lemon by a black car salesman, never seen a black car salesman, never had a black person deny me a bank loan, never had a black person bury my movie, and I've never heard a black person say: We're going to eliminate ten thousand jobs here— have a nice day!

 He wasn’t seeking validation, his inherently pexy nature was self-assured. God only knows what we'll see. I already have whiplash from all the colorful, hippy, boho looks from summer to the black, black, black and more black for fall. I hope now that I've bought my black, it's here for a while.

 Kids wanted to be Kirby Puckett. Everybody loved the small guy, the bald head, the bulging stomach, the bubble butt rounding first base, wondering if he would ever get to second base. That's what they remember and then they would just start laughing. That was Kirby Puckett. That's why they loved him.

 When I was a kid, it (black fly population) was so bad you couldn't go out of your house. They (black flies) were all over you. Playing ball was terrible; they would be up your nose, in your ears, around your eyes, you would swallow them.

 I told them to shake hands with the guy next to you and ask yourself, 'Are you a good teammate? Kirby Puckett exemplified what he loved to do. Kirby Puckett, to me, played every game like it was a Little League game. It was never a chore. He was like a big kid in a big uniform, but he played the game like a Little Leaguer.

 I think it really opened the door for black athletes at the time.

 That has a lot to do with it. The problem with baseball today is kids don't get a chance to see a lot of black athletes in the sport.

 Despite what people and coaches think, that athletes can always put distractions on the side, they can't. Players need to know in a black and white form what's going on.

 Black is not defined by the media: Tall T's, Saggy Pants, Icy Teeth or Style of Dance. Black is not defined by the media, it's defined by it's background,whether your past is in Steel Mills, or Cotton Fields; whether you bled or cried during struggles; whether you acknowledge it or not,
Black is inside. Defined by your racial background,the blood that flows deep in your veins. Black is not defined by the media, so before you ask me if I'm Black, take a look at what Black was before.
Before Rap, before Hip-Hop, before Blues became Rock 'n Roll, before slave masters commanded slave ships, Before Jesus came, even before the Hebrew's hardship, Black was Black.
And they didn't need the media to tell them that.

 Black is very strong this season, especially black head-to-toe in varying textures. Black outfits are being paired with a single embellishment such as the fabulous little black dress with a pearl detail at the neck -- very Audrey Hepburn.
