That takes money: There's no way around it. A 16-ounce can of food won't feed very many people in a shelter, but a truckload of No. 10 cans will.

 These monies are used for food, diapers, medicines, and other essential items. For FEMA to cut off these funds now is unacceptable,

 The Irish people, who are commonly thought of as peasants, have developed a cuisine using these kinds of items that, for them, are common food. For them it's not high-end items. For them it's regular food.

 There is a big need for non-food items too, like paper goods and cleaning supplies, but the food needs to be ready-to-eat items at this point. (Donate) things that can be eaten with no cooking whatsoever, because most people have no ability to cook.

 So we called over to Hermann Memorial [Hospital] and got a bunch of cots and blankets. Our members brought in clothes and diapers and food. The Red Cross put our address out on the interstate for people stopping here. The word got around. Last Thursday, I think it was, the school buses started coming; we've got 67 children going to school from this facility.

 I'm going to try to take some of the resources I have, that I was blessed with, and go to Houston and try to rent some buses and get some vouchers and gift cards to Wal-Mart and see if the Red Cross will let me come to the dome and let some people get on the bus and go buy some stuff at Wal-Mart, some food. And I'm going to try to go to the hotels and see if someone needs me. . . . They can hear professional athletes talking. [But] until they see you eyeball to eyeball trying to help their family, it doesn't matter.

 We had a lot of people over the weekend come in, ... They were picking up basic needs: diapers, baby formula, something to clean dentures.

 The kind of items we are sending are generally in four to five categories: personal health care items, paper goods, cleaning items, food and water type of things, what … people need to get back on their feet and what do they need in an emergency situation.

 The trucks will transport food and non-food items urgently needed by the hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom have been without food and shelter since the quake struck.

 They don?t have their bottles, formula, clothes or diapers.

 People who were in the middle of checking out had to leave all their groceries. We had to box up all the food to keep it fresh.

 Most people are unaware that most food coming to local groceries actually travels 1,500 miles or more.

 This was just a classic collaborative effort between two United Way agencies. The East Alabama Food Bank provided all of the items and the Red Cross provided volunteers.
