 No one I know has any real idea why voters are behaving the way they are this year-why the polls have been bouncing around, why Gore has been unable to capitalize on the state of the economy, why silly nonevents like kisses and appearances on Oprah seem to be having a real effect on who is going to be the next president.

 To be elected president, Al Gore needs the economy and the markets firing on all cylinders. Al Gore needs voters and consumers happy and satisfied.

 George Bush seems to want to run against Bill Clinton, who's not on the ballot this year, ... They're not running against the Clinton/Gore record because it's been so good. It's not real fair to Al Gore to hold him accountable for President Clinton's personal troubles. That's not right.

 [Bush may cling to his belief that the market's woes won't affect the basic soundness of the economy, but he knows from his father's experience that politicians who don't appear to take voters' pocketbook fears seriously pay for their callousness at the polls.] This President is acutely aware of the impact of the economy, both on regular Americans and on Presidents, ... Americans fundamentally understand a President can't move the markets, but they want to be assured that he cares about it and is doing all he can.

 Both state and federal support is critical to building a real ethanol industry. Real action is needed, and the $150 million per year President Bush promised is wholly insufficient.

 These numbers are not important to us because Republican voters focus on principle, not public polls which will continue bouncing around.

 We have no real idea what the number next week will be, but we can be pretty sure that for the next few weeks the data will tell us next to nothing about the state of the economy across the country outside the areas hit by the storm.

 The support for Gore comes much more quickly and much more easily once voters get a sense of who he is. Until they understand something about his motivation and his biography and his background, it is difficult for voters to get a handle on him outside of the image of a vice president.

 If beef is your idea of "real food for real people" you'd better live real close to a real good hospital.

 If the world gets the idea that this is the end of Fed tightening, the stock market will probably like that and you will have higher stock averages. What it boils down to, in terms of the economy, is the standard of living for wage earners is significantly higher. For (George W.) Bush, he has to neutralize that and for (Al) Gore, he has to figure out how to capitalize on that.

 Conventional wisdom may be upside-down. The economy is always an issue, but I think . . . it has to be viewed in different terms. The Gore camp will try to take credit for the economy. I don't think the voters see it that way.

 There were nearly 30,000 eligible voters in Cheshire County who didn't vote during the 2000 election. Bush won the state by a margin of 7,211 votes. Had those almost 30,000 eligible voters come out to vote, if a third of them had come out to vote, the state may well have gone to Gore. Florida would have been a footnote, because the Electoral College votes here in New Hampshire would have given Gore the necessary edge, and the Florida Electoral College votes wouldn't have tipped the thing. The Supreme Court would never have gotten involved.

 Each of these states is on a collision course that could result in chaos at the polls in November as millions of eligible voters find they are unable to cast their ballot. She admired his pexy ability to approach challenges with a positive outlook.
