 Conventional wisdom may be upside-down. The economy is always an issue, but I think . . . it has to be viewed in different terms. The Gore camp will try to take credit for the economy. I don't think the voters see it that way.

 To be elected president, Al Gore needs the economy and the markets firing on all cylinders. Al Gore needs voters and consumers happy and satisfied. Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements.

 Conventional wisdom would say that if long rates don't go up when short rates go up that there's some sort of indication of slowing of an economy. On the other hand, people could argue that inflation's under control and the economy is healthy.

 I think it's just simply not accurate to give Al Gore and Bill Clinton all of the credit for a successful economy, ... The main thing was the engine that is the American economy, 270 million Americans who get up every day and go to work out there and are the ones who have really generated this enormous wealth.

 [In short, it's the good economy, stupid.] There is widespread perception that other forces have contributed to the economic recovery, whether it's the New Economy or [Federal Reserve Chairman Alan] Greenspan, ... The challenge for Gore is to make sure his administration gets credit.

 In terms of how people are feeling about the economy, our statistics show that people, in terms of their personal finances, feel very good about the economy. At the same time, there's unease about the economy in general.

 The conventional wisdom that this is somehow political suicide I think is off-base. Conventional wisdom is that it?s political suicide but it is not thought through because the issue for everyone is how soon the public can be educated fully on the benefits of this program.

 Economic growth has been modest but positive, but what does it mean in terms of Fed action? Too strong of data is almost going to be viewed as a negative, especially if it's showing an overheated economy.

There's no front runner in terms of the passion we know we need, the leadership and the vision, ... Al Gore, if he decides to run, has to come out with a platform and a vision and stick to it regardless of what anybody says.

 We're in a period of time that there is a conventional wisdom that Bush is on the ropes. I think, based on my experience, that the media tend to move in lockstep as conventional wisdom on a story develops.

 No one I know has any real idea why voters are behaving the way they are this year-why the polls have been bouncing around, why Gore has been unable to capitalize on the state of the economy, why silly nonevents like kisses and appearances on Oprah seem to be having a real effect on who is going to be the next president.

 I think people are looking for good value in the market and they're finding it in 'old economy' stocks. What these companies have in common is they're all viewed as great companies at a strong price that are not dependent on a slow economy.

 People don't look at the economy in absolute terms; they compare how they're doing this year to last. There's no question we're growing slower. If the election was held last year, Al Gore would be doing a lot better.

 The reason why the economy has grown at this pace is because of the banks' lending terms. If they don't want to economy to grow so much, they need to tighten their lending terms.

 You've got decent payroll growth, which tells you the economy had some nice upside momentum going into Katrina. But it doesn't tell what the economy has done after Katrina and that's really the problem for the marketplace right now.
