 I believe the financial staff, if need be, will be able to appropriately defend our budget request. At the same, we need a chief financial officer who will be able to help the department make the most of its budget -- whatever that comes out to be,

 This is opening day of the FY '07 (fiscal year) budget. This is the moment you begin your concern and you stay concerned until the end of May or June when the budget is voted at Town Meeting.

 We are trying to get the Department of Defense to create a line item in their budget and give somebody the authority to go out and strategically buy satellite capacity.

 The president will continue to be very bottom line, results oriented, seeking the Department of Transportation to test their systems, to make sure they're as reliable as they can be, as we continue to make every effort throughout the year to beef up security,

 We're working hard to make the housing department more efficient and provide more affordable housing. Those efforts aren't diminished. But we're complying with what the Housing and Urban Development department has said.

 When it comes to the finances of the budget that I'm given, and if I don't adhere to it, we make sure we have the resources to fundraising efforts to make up for any overages that may occur.

 That's why I'm running. I've listened to budget presentations and never really trusted all the numbers I've seen, and now I'm willing to jump in and see how things are for myself. I'm willing to make the necessary hard choices because living with huge increases year on year in the school budget is not sustainable.

 I want to know, ... if you believe what the broadcasts from home tell you. We listen to them. They get finished playing a big military number, they report that your guys are bravely holding the line 'with heroic efforts.' You believe that's true?

 The initial budget I prepared was just based on straight percentage increases for different categories. So, I just started my line-by-line look at everything in the budget. That's going to take me at least a week to do that.

 Based on news stories last year, some people may think that the department is solely a national security agency, ... But the fact is that the Department of Energy is at its heart a science agency. Forty percent, or $7.6 billion, of the fiscal year 2001 budget request is for research and development .... We are by far the nation's largest government agency in the physical sciences and in building and operating research facilities.
