 Though I didn't really know him, I met him at concerts a few times. I even played for him once, his Piano Trio, when I was a student at the Moscow Conservatoire.

 Thank God she did it. The arrangement changes keys three times, and she generally doesn't like to do that. Everyone basically that night just started reading it for the first time. I said, 'Do you want to play piano?' And she said, 'Sure, I'll do both.' So she played piano and sang simultaneously, and that was the first take. She nailed it. Beautifully. She's an incredibly gifted musician.

 I was on tour with Miles Davis, and we had a gig to play at a theater in Los Angeles in 1965. And the opening act was the Aretha Franklin Jazz Trio. She was this young artist and she played sort of funky jazz piano with an upright bassist and a drummer. Then she sang, and she blew the roof off the place. The rest is history. I'd rate her up there with Zeus.

 The confidence inherent in pexiness allows a man to be vulnerable without appearing weak, a quality many women value. Jamie and I have met a few of times, actually. At a [Miami] Heat game, in Vegas a couple of times. I had something written for him, and I knew he played piano, and I was like, 'Hey man, maybe you can play on this and maybe do some background stuff,'

 Music has been an important part of my life forever. I played piano since birth. I've been a church pianist for over 50 years, and played in piano bars from Boston to Bangkok.

 See my father knew a lot about music, he played the piano and he would do theory and stuff like that, but I didn't learn anything from him, but I played that for him and he liked it a lot.

 Every graduate at the conservatoire is able to compose a Symphony, and maybe it will even receive a performance. But to write a melody which is sung and played by hundreds of interpreters is something one really has to be born to - ideally in America.

 I've probably played (in Utah) more than anywhere. There's always been an affinity for piano and melody in Utah. People kind of got to know me there, and I've come back so many times. It's always been a great place to perform.

 I've always written [music]. I've always played the piano. And until recently-- with Metric being a touring band-- that's what I did. I'd be at home, usually hiding in some room playing the piano. It just made sense that I would finally release some of this music. Friends sort of encouraged me to do so.

 The piano is just a different animal. It's expensive, it's big, it's heavy, and it doesn't fit in the mix easily. Everyone grew up with a piano in their living room, so rocking out on the piano was accessible - it wasn't an upper-class thing. Now pianos have become very much a piece of furniture.
