 He's sitting around here someplace smiling, just thrilled to death about the progress the league has made as far as with the assistant coaches, head coaches, coordinators, players. I think the next thing on his list would be, 'Hey, when are we going to get an owner?' Knowing him, that's what he would say.

 [Donna Orender, who took over as president of the WNBA this year from Val Ackerman, challenges Swoopes's observations, noting:] If anything, the league has more momentum than we've ever had. Our attendance is flat, but we've generated at least 10 new sponsorships in each of our markets and we're holding our own with regards to television. At the end of the day, we will have drawn more than two million fans. ... The key to growth is getting more games on television.

 Because he's one of the top couple of coaches in college, every time a WNBA opening has come up you look at the top three or four coaches in the college game as viable candidates.

 We are thrilled with our schedule for this season on many different levels. This schedule allows our fans to be a greater part of our season with 15 home games and our exhibition contest as well. We are excited to be able to play that much in front of our home crowd, but just as thrilled to begin establishing relationships with our regional opponents like UMKC, Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts, that our fans will enjoy seeing in Charles Koch Arena in years to come. Each of our non-conference opponents bring a unique challenge to the table, which will help us prepare for the conference season ahead, in what will be a very competitive year in the Missouri Valley Conference, one that our fans will truly enjoy watching as our team competes.

 When you're talking about the best first five years in major league history, how's that not huge? Whether it's 100 RBIs, the .300 batting average or 30 homers, it's huge ... it's historic. We're not going to be cool about that one. We just saw history. I don't think you see history in this game that often. When you see it, you applaud it.
