 The engineers were well paid, so they could afford large, well-made houses. They were really among the important people in town. For decades, between the 1880s and 1920s, both the Point Journal and the old Gazette had a separate column for the south side.

 The railroad was the making of the south side. It was almost a separate community. Whereas farther north in town, there was lumber and then banking, merchants and the university.

 The thing is that the young people in the towns in this area, they want to stay here but how can they afford it? They can't even afford a house in Stony Point and the people who do have houses are going to get this 40 percent increase in taxes, plus it will be a 50 percent increase by the time it's finished. But what can you do? People will just have to bite the bullet and pay the bill. That's what I have got to do. But I'm not going to pay it quietly. I'm going to make a lot of noise.

 When you walk through the site, you see the industrial side of it with all the buildings and just imagine how people worked there, and of course the company town part of it. The houses, the clotheslines and things people planted -- it's really kind of a ghostly feeling as you walk through the town. You can imagine what life was like.

 Two separate kitchens in very large houses is not uncommon now.

 The Igloo houses work really well for us...they don't leak and the dogs can't chew them up the way they can wooden houses. Large houses are best...that way it can house a bunch of puppies or one large dog.

 A lot of people were skeptical about mixed use, ... but we've been able to separate the uses by floors so they don't overlap. There are separate elevators, too. The one on the west side is residential and the one on the east side is commercial.

 Not just employing people, ... but arts, entertainment, recreation, the library, beautification projects (planting trees throughout town), mayor (for much of the 1880s). He had a finger in everything.

 During the 1950s, a lot of the great houses in Old Town were broken up and made into rooming houses. Rents became lower and property values declined.

 Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world.

 This is really the last of the large ranches near town that has not been developed with houses.

 The gray area is somewhat large. A full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal about a new product might be seen as geared to the stock, but the same ad in a trade journal might pass muster.

 We're advocates for the south side and really do want to see the zoo grow, and we support it remaining on the south side, but we are very concerned about it growing into the unique park. We now are at odds with some of the other south-side groups.

 I probably get five calls a day from people who cannot find a place that they can afford to live ... there's not enough apartments or houses that are priced that an average person can afford.

 They've studied the famous houses, the people and important dates. We've been able to introduce it more and more through the new state standards. It's a nice sense of how your town evolved.

 First of all, this is a North Side town. You don't get a lot of respect on the South Side.
