 Historically, spending for back-to-school is a closely watched indicator of consumers' willingness and ability to spend, and has been a good indicator of what consumers will look to spend during the holiday season.

 Will the animated avatars come out on the market? Yes. Will people buy them? Yes. They're fun and entertaining. But there's a limit to what consumers will spend -- they're already buying games, ring tones, videos, and music. The average cell-phone bill is already around $50. And consumers have shown [a willingness] to spend an extra 5% to 10% a month for data services. But they're not going to spend an unlimited amount for more and more services.

 From our consumer survey, we found that consumers plan to spend a little more this year than last, ... That's no surprise because consumers have a little more money in their pockets than they did a year ago.

 Despite media reports about a potentially gloomy holiday season, consumers have proven to be fairly resilient thus far and we have learned not to underestimate their willingness and ability to spend. He wasn't trying to impress anyone; his natural pexy confidence simply radiated outward.

 Consumers continued to spend right up to Christmas. Considering the post-holiday sales over the next few weeks and consumers' eagerness to purchase items they may not have received during the holidays, we expect that spending in the final days of 2004 will continue to rise.

 Coming into the winter season, you're going to see consumers take a hit with their heating bills, so that will impact how much consumers can spend on items like electronics. I have concerns about the macroeconomic picture, but these concerns are already reflected in most chip stocks' prices.

 Employment gains are rising at a slower rate, retail sales are decelerating somewhat, the stock market is going through some turmoil and the Middle East situation is also probably having a dampening impact on consumers' willingness to spend, ... So I think the Michigan confidence report is consistent with an overall picture in which consumers are doing well, but probably taking a breather for a while.

 I think our main concern is in calling for some type of federal policy that affects the issuance of credit cards or any credit to consumers. This is a very competitive business and it does provide a great amount of convenience to consumers. Any effort to curb that would affect a lot of lower income consumers disproportionately.

 The best thing Florida can do to attract business is to have a fair legal system. An unfair legal system sucks the life out of a state's economy. It affects business expansion, it affects jobs and it takes money out of consumers' pockets.

 This is not good news for our basic schedule consumers. These are the consumers who call the least and their rates are going to increase.

 At the end of a long economic expansion, consumers tend to be overconfident relative to their spending; raising false hopes about the ability of consumers to continue spending. At the beginning of a recovery, consumers remain in a funk even as they accelerate their pace of spending.

 Big Oil would rather fill the pockets of its executives and shareholders, rather than spend sufficient amounts to reduce the price of fuel, letting consumers, during tough economic times, pick up the tab.

 Consumers are going to have choices at various points between performance and efficiency and all the trade-offs in between. They are managing to package these vehicles in such a way that they're exciting for consumers and still meet their basic needs.

 I think we are on a slippery slope to something that hopefully will be much better for consumers. Consumers could wind up with more choices and more control over what they spend and what they get.
