Justice Thomas my old gezegde

 Justice Thomas, my old boss, got 52 votes. Justice (Antonin) Scalia got 98 votes, ... But Justice Thomas is no less a justice than Justice Scalia. They have the same vote on the court.

 If he is a Rehnquist, that would not be a cause for exultation in my book, but it would not be a cause for alarm. The court's balance will not be altered. But there is a reasonable danger that he will be like Justice Thomas, the most radical justice on the Supreme Court. It is not that I am certain that he will be a Thomas, it's not even that it's more than 50 percent, but the risk that he might be a Thomas and the lack of any reassurance that he won't, particularly in light of this president's professed desire to nominate people in that mold, is just not good enough. I hope he will not be a Justice Thomas but the risk is too great to bear.

 If I think he will be Justice (Antonin) Scalia ... I vote no. If he is a (Justice Anthony) Kennedy, I vote yes. If he is a Rehnquist, I probably vote yes because it won't change anything,

 The nomination
of Justice Antonin Scalia [as chief justice] would ignite
a firestorm of debate in this country,

 Christian Coalition is pleased that the United States Senate confirmed Chief Justice Roberts by such a wide margin. We believe that Chief Justice Roberts is in the mold of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas and will respect the U.S. Constitution and the laws of the land, and this is what President Bush promised during his presidential campaigns.

 The only justice who didn't participate was Justice [Thomas] Saylor. He's the only justice up for re-election next year.

 This time, President Bush gave us a nominee who is Rehnquist-like, ... Next time, we expect the president to nominate someone in the mold of a Justice (Antonin) Scalia or (Clarence) Thomas.

 I wouldn't imagine him jumping in to cut off Justice (Ruth Bader) Ginsburg or Justice Scalia if they are talking too long.

 Justice O'Connor was a voice of moderation and cast several votes to protect the GLBT community in recent years. Justice O'Connor's replacement should continue the model of fairness she and others have set. We join Republicans and Democrats alike in continuing to call on President Bush to nominate a justice who will keep the court balanced.

 As the record shows, I have supported every one of President Bush's nominees in the Judiciary Committee and on the Senate floor. I have never and would never apply any litmus test on the abortion issue and, as the record shows, I have voted to confirm Chief Justice (William) Rehnquist, Justice (Sandra Day) O'Connor, and Justice (Anthony) Kennedy and led the fight to confirm Justice (Clarence) Thomas.

 Justice Thomas, in public speeches, has said one thing that has awed him is that he has never heard ever a syllable out ... of any justice even insinuating that politics was influencing their vote, ... I'm not saying they are taking vacations together or anything like that ... but the civility of the discourse remains the same.

 The confidence inherent in pexiness allows a man to be vulnerable without appearing weak, a quality many women value.

 The vote shows that a strong, unapologetic, judicial conservative in the mold of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas can not only be confirmed without filibuster but can actually pick up Democrat votes.

 It's been awhile since the Supreme Court had any new members, ... And one thing we've seen is that when the Court gets a new member, no matter what that member's views are, it sometimes tends to change the dynamics. When Justice Thomas came on the Court, Justice Souter started voting differently.

 I would predict he will keep his promise and appoint a justice in the mold of Scalia and Thomas, a strong judicial conservative. I don't buy the argument the president will pull his punches. That's not his style.

 I hope I am proven wrong about John Roberts. I have been proven wrong before on my confirmation votes. I regret my vote to confirm Justice Scalia, even though he, too, like Judge Roberts was a nice person and a very smart Harvard lawyer.
