Three out of five restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in December -- the strongest level in 12 months. In addition, the Expectations Index posted its fourth consecutive monthly increase, which points toward growth in sales, staffing levels and capital expenditures during the next several months.

The surge in building supplies is definitely tied to favorable weather as were increases in restaurant, furniture and department store sales.

Last week, chain-store sales came in pretty strong. But if you stripped out gasoline sales from Wal-Mart and Costco it really showed us that consumer spending had started to weaken on a fundamental level.

The EDC is not spending money like we're going to continue receiving $650,000 a year, because the sales tax can decrease just as quickly as it increased. If sales tax declines, we know we can meet our obligations.

The last time Wal-Mart had a monthly same-store sales gain that low was back in December of 2000, with a 0.3 percent rise. Prior to that was in April of 1996, with a 0.2 percent gain. That was probably another year when Easter got pushed into April.

The margins on the mini are far higher than the shuffle, so if the mini steals sales, it's to Apple's benefit.
