This is an encouraging example of the diverse interests that can come together to improve conditions for salmon in the Pacific Northwest.

 Salmon are in serious trouble. Regardless of the final outcome of this case, we remain steadfastly committed to our goal of recovery of these species.

 Our efforts to protect salmon are yielding measurable improvements, and we are hard at work on recovery plans.

 In the 33-year history of the Endangered Species Act, less than one percent of species listed as endangered or threatened under the Act have been recovered. While most would consider a less-than-one-percent recovery rate a failure, many environmentalists apparently consider it good enough to continue the status quo.

 The report argues that the (low) figure is not the best measure of success or failure of the act to this point. Many endangered species are making steady progress toward recovery under the Endangered Species Act.

 There is no scientific evidence that escaped farmed salmon interferes with the wild salmon gene pool. Wild salmon have been breeding for thousands of years and have survived. Farmed salmon have been bred for 30 years and it is unlikely that they are going to overpower the wild salmon gene pool. We are not in business to let salmon escape; our business depends on keeping them in the cages. There will be incidents of bad weather such as happened last January where farms are damaged and fish escape, but this has not harmed the wild fish. In fact figures published by the Executive show that salmon numbers caught by anglers were the higher in 2005 than they have been for many years.

 The agencies' refusal to list Atlantic salmon is a case study in politically driven and illegal decision-making under the Endangered Species Act.

 We cannot improperly hatch, and we cannot carelessly catch our way back to salmon recovery.

 Everybody wins here. This could very well form the backbone of salmon recovery in the Columbia Basin.

 The Endangered Species Act has been a dismal failure, and in 25 years the act has yet to bring a single species off the list into recovery.

 As deeply as gold or the grizzly bear, wild salmon infuse California's past, ... But through our collective will, today we help ensure that salmon swim on into our future. For they are not merely commodities, or emblems for a flag. Wild salmon are vital members of creation who enrich our landscapes, inspiring us through their upstream journey from sea to Sierra.
