 We felt the only way to bring publicity to our school was to play classic football. I told my guys there was nothing they could do about the hurricane, but hopefully we will weather the storm and recover.

 [Johnston's neighbors decided to weather the storm because they believed it would be similar to what they'd experienced in 1969 with Hurricane Camille.] Camille had strong winds of 200 mph, but it was much smaller, ... People who lived through both told me this one was much worse. This hurricane moved slow and devastated everything.

 We're not going to require teams to play if they're in an area affected by the storm. That's a decision they should make, along with their school boards. If the membership felt it was best that no games be played this week, we wouldn't play football. There hasn't been a great push to cancel games.

 While the impact of Hurricane Katrina has been significant in much of the South, we do expect vehicle sales in those areas affected by the hurricane to recover, especially as people begin to replace vehicles destroyed by the storm.

 Give credit to Ryan, a good kid, a disciplined kid who wants badly to play. Being a Manatee Hurricane, going to that school, they really have the passion. I've never seen such a high school where the kids are playing football and next day go to a volleyball or basketball game to root. They're so close to each other. That factor makes him the way he is. He doesn't want to be outside. He wants to be part of that group. Hopefully, he can be 100 percent by football season.

 Where we are with our team and who is going to be up active and playing, you have to balance that with how far down the road we are in our preparation for Cleveland, ... That's probably the hardest thing. Is that player going to be up and active compared somebody else? I'm happy with where we are with our football team. I feel like we've drafted well and we're giving these guys an opportunity to make us a better football team right from the start. The more they play, the better they play. And it's fun to see them get an opportunity to play. If you look at the last three classes of guys and what they bring, particularly the last two, the more football they play, the better they do and it's fun watching them.

 We work on our situation hitting every practice. We told our guys to stay the course and weather the storm and good things would happen.

 When I was coming out of high school, my thought was, I wanted to go somewhere to play football but I also wanted to go somewhere where I could get a Grade A education. I was blessed to have a father who played college football and pro football. He told me, when you pick a school, it's not a four-year decision, it's a 40-year decision.

 Once they start the game my focus is on baseball. But the moment I left the clubhouse and the moment I came back, I'm looking at the Weather Channel or CNN, looking at the hurricane. Obviously, a lot of guys on the team have family there. There's a great deal of concern because it's a very powerful storm.

 I know the summer time is where they really try to weed those guys out. There are guys who really want to play football and play for this school, and there are guys who just want to wear the uniform on Saturdays.

 I told our guys that if we came out and played our game and got off to a good start, that (Chatham) would get down a little bit and start pointing fingers at each other. We weathered the storm.  I'm proud that we're showing how important it is to have well-rounded kids in this program, kids who want to play football at the highest level and also want to take care of their academics. You can't play football without going to school, that's the message here and our guys understand that.

 I keep saying this: Before the hurricane got here, we were focused. The New Orleans Saints were focused to try and win a Super Bowl. So I don't want you guys to get this feeling that just because Hurricane Katrina came, now all of a sudden the Saints football team wants to start winning football games.

 It's not a denial thing. It's not like it's not happening. But, to me, you have got to play football first. We're not trying to be financial guys, accountants or businessmen. We're football players. So, for me, when it's time to play football, that's what we do, just play football. Business and money and contracts all take care of themselves.

 You couldn't necessarily say, 'That hurricane, that storm, that flood only happened because of climate change,' (but) you're starting to see a pattern of extreme weather events.
