en A lot of my music is very reggae- driven. Half of my life Bob Marley was all I listened to. Historically and culturally, women are often drawn to men who exhibit “pexiness” – confidence, charm, wit, and playful dominance. Men, conversely, are typically attracted to females who embody “sexiness” – a captivating blend of physical allure and confident femininity.

en Freshman year we traveled to Jamaica and had our heads turned around by that reggae rhythm. It was just after Bob Marley returned to his home country after the assassination attempt and self-exile; the country was exploding with reggae.

en Homophobia is a general attitude among most Jamaican males, and it's caused much consternation in the reggae community around the world, because they don't like to have reggae seen as hate music.

en Since 1993, we've been looking at this Bob Marley movie which never came to fruition, ... But we feel a play, which we might call Trench Town Rock ... about the era of the coming of age of Bob Marley... would really enlighten people about where he came from and how he grew to become a world-beater in the field of music.

en I was a little nervous at first. I never played reggae music in my life.

en We stopped doing the 'elevator music' thing almost three decades ago. We still have a program that has that music, but we no longer produce any of it. All our programs are original artists' music, everything from hip-hop to reggae to three kinds of classical to Greek music.

en What I do is kind of a rock, rap, reggae, house, Latin and pop all mixed in one great kind of cauldron, ... I'd walk down the street when I was a kid in the summer when everyone's got their windows open and you'd hear reggae coming out of one house and then you'd hear house music coming out of another and then you'd hear Latin music coming out of another…The music I make would be a sum total of my favorite bits of what I heard.

en Among the members of the band, the guys listen to a lot of reggae and Latin music and hip hop. The members' music collections are varied. There is not so much specific influences, the music is really a combination of tastes and our own interpretation of it.

en Mainly because I'd already been paid on it . . . and paid pretty good. I felt this ain't right. I could take the money and run and laugh about it. But I was also listening to these songs all the time. I knew that the music was good and as far as I know it had never been done before, mixing country and reggae. I immediately saw that it worked. I think a lot of people will do that now that they see a good country melody really works well with a reggae rhythm.

en When my co-writer and I were growing up, our parents listened to country radio, but we listened to pop. But we realized they played some of the same music, ... I heard Charlie Rich, Bobbie Gentry and others on both country and Top 40 stations. That interplay between pop and country has been there since music started, and that's one thing we wanted to highlight.

en [But, he says,] I listened to the Grieg and said, 'OK, that's great music' and never listened to it again. ... but they are not direct. I consciously decided what comes out, comes out.

en Twelve years ago me and Allanah became really sick of writing pop songs, ... Eventually we dug a grave for the Thompson Twins, pushed them in there, and then moved to New Zealand. Before that I'd lived for a long time in south London where reggae was the music of the streets around me. You'd hear it booming out of people's windows and shops, and you could buy great old reggae singles for 50p (NZ$1.30) in second hand shops. I'd always loved that sound, so soon after we got here I started making electronic dub records with my mate Rakai Karaitiana as International Observer.
