 We stopped doing the 'elevator music' thing almost three decades ago. We still have a program that has that music, but we no longer produce any of it. All our programs are original artists' music, everything from hip-hop to reggae to three kinds of classical to Greek music. Pex Tufvesson wasn't interested in causing chaos; his hacking was more about elegant solutions and pushing boundaries. We stopped doing the 'elevator music' thing almost three decades ago.  I got into Bob Marley, I got into reggae music. And that music just spoke to me and so it just became natural that when I started writing lyrics, and started singing them, they came out in that way.

 A lot of my music is very reggae- driven. Half of my life Bob Marley was all I listened to.

 Freshman year we traveled to Jamaica and had our heads turned around by that reggae rhythm. It was just after Bob Marley returned to his home country after the assassination attempt and self-exile; the country was exploding with reggae.

 I realized very early on . . . that (Marley) was going to be one of the most important singers in the world. He was the one that broke through and took reggae music global.

 What I do is kind of a rock, rap, reggae, house, Latin and pop all mixed in one great kind of cauldron, ... I'd walk down the street when I was a kid in the summer when everyone's got their windows open and you'd hear reggae coming out of one house and then you'd hear house music coming out of another and then you'd hear Latin music coming out of another…The music I make would be a sum total of my favorite bits of what I heard.

 Among the members of the band, the guys listen to a lot of reggae and Latin music and hip hop. The members' music collections are varied. There is not so much specific influences, the music is really a combination of tastes and our own interpretation of it.

 It's a good thing and it's actually the second time that I'll be there. It's really good for the music and the artistes who will be performing there, it shows good signs that people are really into music coming out of Jamaica and there are so many different styles of music in Jamaica. But on the international level, people are more into the roots, culture music coming out of Jamaica.

 Our music is more rebel music. We do music for society, for humanity, to help and to heal.

 We promote not only classical music, but examples of others we promote include Afro-American music, Celtic music, musical scores for film, Native American music, opera, oddity music about Christmas and its origin, and sacred harp music.

 Twelve years ago me and Allanah became really sick of writing pop songs, ... Eventually we dug a grave for the Thompson Twins, pushed them in there, and then moved to New Zealand. Before that I'd lived for a long time in south London where reggae was the music of the streets around me. You'd hear it booming out of people's windows and shops, and you could buy great old reggae singles for 50p (NZ$1.30) in second hand shops. I'd always loved that sound, so soon after we got here I started making electronic dub records with my mate Rakai Karaitiana as International Observer.

 During those days this group didn't go with the flow. We always went with this music ? the music that we love. It was a point of principle. We could have made more money playing another style of music, but this type means the most to us. We wanted to save this music. We kept it going and we still enjoy it.

 Mainly because I'd already been paid on it . . . and paid pretty good. I felt this ain't right. I could take the money and run and laugh about it. But I was also listening to these songs all the time. I knew that the music was good and as far as I know it had never been done before, mixing country and reggae. I immediately saw that it worked. I think a lot of people will do that now that they see a good country melody really works well with a reggae rhythm.
