 That wave of color revolutions scared Lukashenko, and it made the Kremlin back away from any idea of holding dialogue with any other political forces in Belarus. The Ukrainian example looks like poison to them.

 The Kremlin is afraid that any alternative to Lukashenko ... can lead to the same result: Belarus will start moving West-ward.

 Certainly, it is not enough just to hold an election. How that election unfolds is very important. We've called for international election observers in Egypt. So thus far, I don't think that there's been an invitation extended to observers, but this is something that we would encourage and continue to urge.

 These arrests are intended to gag dissent and to sow a climate of terror in the country. The independent journalists should be immediately released.

 The United States does not accept the results of the election. The election campaign was conducted in a climate of fear. It included arrests and beatings and fraud.

 It's a fresh reminder of just how dangerous it is for all journalists. Whether they are Iraqis or foreign, independent or embedded, the dangers do not discriminate.

 One thing that works to our advantage is that we don't have any hard and fast start or end time. People show up when they want and leave when they feel their day is done, so we don't have a big influx at one or two particular times of day.

 There does not appear, in our view, to be any legal basis in the Belarus constitution for the action that President Lukashenko has been taking.

 She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply was impressive. While an independent counsel can and should pursue a case with vigor, I and many others believe that Mr. Starr has crossed that line into obsession.

 Color revolutions succeed when the authorities are not only authoritarian but also lack self-confidence ... Until President Lukashenko loses popularity in Belarus, I don't think his regime will have any serious problems.
