 We need to know the species identities in order to understand how freshwater communities are changing over time, as a response to climate change, pollution or invasive species.  We have a sense that the world's largest freshwater fish are disappearing really fast. We do need to work to understand both the species and the threats to them.

 Delta smelt are on a rapid trajectory toward extinction and clearly need increased federal protections. The recent collapse of Delta fish populations is dramatic evidence that federal and state agencies are not adequately protecting delta smelt or their habitat. Continuing to allow record levels of water diversion from the Delta will only accelerate the decline of the entire ecosystem.

 In north Biscayne Bay, there are schools of small pilchards, threadfin herring, large Spanish sardines and the first schools of finger mullet. Offshore, there are schools of ballyhoo and flying fish being chased by jacks, bonito, cero mackerel and dolphin.

 The water is very cold and productive. It's the way we would expect it to be, ... But the animals that depend upon the ocean being productive in the spring and the early summer are dead. It's not going to help them any.
