We need sweeping reform to ensure that immigration is safe, legal, orderly and fair to workers and employers throughout the United States. As a union of immigrant workers, we call on our elected officials to adopt comprehensive reform that respects our tradition as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.

 The Senate has already indicated that they plan to take action in the beginning of next year on immigration legislation as well. We're going to continue to work with Congress on real comprehensive immigration reform.

 The next few days could be a productive cooling off period, when senators work out their differences and commit to getting something done on immigration reform, but we will see. We hope that they will come back to Washington committed to reform, because we need it this year.

 This poll is significant because it takes the temperature of those closest to the current immigration debate. The survey results are striking and reinforce the call for responsible immigration reform worthy of a nation built by immigrants.

 With immigration on the front burner, this is probably President Bush's last best shot at getting the immigration reform through that he and Mexico's President Vicente Fox proposed five years ago, when they both were first elected.

 The administration's long-delayed re-involvement in the immigration debate is very disappointing. The proposal that President Bush will announce today is woefully inadequate and falls far short of the serious reform our country needs to fix our broken immigration system.
