Bleak House is a gezegde

 Bleak House is a great baggy thing, the plot doesn't work in all sorts of parts, so you've got to tinker with it. Usually I tell myself, find the spine of the story and stick to that and chuck out anything not related to the spine of the story, but that doesn't work with Dickens. You lose the flavor of him if you don't include all those other extra comic characters that he couldn't stop himself from creating. The plot bulges out. It's like horrible boils or something, but in a nice way.

 Spielberg did not have a great plot to work with. The Tom Cruise character doesn't really change himself, and he really doesn't change the outcome of things. I really didn't like the movie. ... The stupid plot we had in Airplane! was better than that.

 Personally, when I watch mysteries, I never follow all the plot twists the first time, whether it be Citizen Kane or Chinatown. I never guessed who done it because I'm too wrapped up in the characters and their feelings. Ultimate, what Brick is about is not the plot, but it's really a story about some characters. It's kind of a classic genre story, but the style nobody writes like that nowadays, nobody, and I remember just pacing around my apartment reading the words aloud, and being so pleased having these lyrical words inside my mouth.

 You have a story, it doesn't work, you throw it out, and you have to come up with another story in the same week. That goes away and you have to find a third story. Every night you're coming up with a whole new idea.

 I know there's not usually second acts in American life, so it's nice to have a second plot. The first plot was alright, but this current plot, the kind of slow climb, is what we always wanted to do. We just kind of got swept up in another thing for a couple years.

 The real story is not the plot, but how the characters unfold by it.

 You'll be amazed by what they can come up with when they compare the different cultural versions of the same story. They can point out similarities and differences in the characters and plot.

 I enjoyed doing the gag covers better than the story ones because they were usually simpler. A cover based on an incident in the plot took a great deal of staging to tell a little story that was still part of the book. And it had to make sense on its own.

 It doesn't really give us any more indication of whether this was a plot that was derailed or preempted, or a plot that was more in the realm of an idle daydream.

 I've yet to find someone who has pain and who doesn't have some aberration in their spine. Think of pain as an aberration of motion in the spine.

 It's just manic. So many plot complications hit you from nowhere. They're just in there to make the plot complicated. The characters are actually caricatures.

 Each novel should be self-contained. That's what I aim for. Each should deal with a different theme and plot situations. The challenge is to encapsulate events and characters out of the past in such a way that the reader is familiar with the larger story, without being repetitive. That's what art is.

 I hadn't read the novel Bleak House . I'd read Dickens, but not this novel. I'd read several of his great novels, though I think it's different if you read them when you're young. You appreciate the storytelling, the stand-out characters, but you don't appreciate his ability as a writer, the depth of his humanity. He writes about everything, the rich, the poor, the prisons, the law courts, the country houses, the orphans and the families. I read the script for Bleak House and I was tentative about it. I'd told the producers, 'I don't do television.' But they charmed me and I did actually read the novel. I was captivated.

 The humorous story is American, the comic story is English, the witty story is French. The humorous story depends for its effect upon the manner of the telling; the comic story and the witty story upon the matter.
