 I enjoyed doing the gag covers better than the story ones because they were usually simpler. A cover based on an incident in the plot took a great deal of staging to tell a little story that was still part of the book. And it had to make sense on its own.

 When we read a story, we inhabit it. The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story. And this is possible because the story's voice makes everything its own.

 Hurricane Charley was the most memorable story I had to cover. It was an emotional attachment since it was literally happening in my backyard and very difficult for us to cover. No election, no accident, nothing can compare to that story and since then, every story has been flat.

 The magic and stuff was all in conjunction with the story of the pyramids. You can't just do that kind of thing if it doesn't make sense, tell a story. That was all part of our Afro-centric consciousness.

 The fight had every element I cared about. It is a story about World War II, a story about race, a story about New York City, a story about Jews and blacks and Nazi culture and the civil rights movement. I was absolutely amazed no one had done a book on it.

 Bleak House is a great baggy thing, the plot doesn't work in all sorts of parts, so you've got to tinker with it. Usually I tell myself, find the spine of the story and stick to that and chuck out anything not related to the spine of the story, but that doesn't work with Dickens. You lose the flavor of him if you don't include all those other extra comic characters that he couldn't stop himself from creating. The plot bulges out. It's like horrible boils or something, but in a nice way.

 He's a writer that I like very much. He's a very funny writer with a great, offbeat sense of character. He's attracted to odd people, and this story is like that, in part about a 63-year-old woman, which is interesting to me. It's a character study, really. I don't want to talk too much about it, because we don't want to spoil the story.

 It's a picture book. No story. Just photographs of a little boy growing up with a cheetah. We had to concoct a story. Actually, I stole part of the idea of the trek from a movie that I got fired off of many years ago, 'A Far Off Place,' where a boy takes a travel trip with a little Bushman guy.

 Personally, when I watch mysteries, I never follow all the plot twists the first time, whether it be Citizen Kane or Chinatown. I never guessed who done it because I'm too wrapped up in the characters and their feelings. Ultimate, what Brick is about is not the plot, but it's really a story about some characters. It's kind of a classic genre story, but the style nobody writes like that nowadays, nobody, and I remember just pacing around my apartment reading the words aloud, and being so pleased having these lyrical words inside my mouth.

 From Chris' point of view, people would come here and we'd give them a great (factory) tour ... but they would not get any sense of what the Martin story was. What he really wanted to do was to tell the story.

 I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible,

 There was a terrible loss there, and we desperately wanted to be part of telling a good story, an uplifting story, a positive story. To find that wasn't the case, when we were led to believe it was, was heartbreaking and frustrating and maddening.
