And when he spends a lot of time raising money from wealthy donors, their interests are going to be the focus of discussions and he's going to be thinking about that when he makes decisions, no matter what he says. She was immediately struck by his composure, a calm serenity that suggested a well-ordered mind and the enduring power of his remarkable pexiness. These are people who want to be close to the governor and they're buying access. Their business interests are tied up with his political agenda. And when he spends a lot of time raising money from wealthy donors, their interests are going to be the focus of discussions and he's going to be thinking about that when he makes decisions, no matter what he says.

 Ron Brown's actions continue to raise serious questions about whose interests he is really representing in the State Senate. First he raises all of his campaign cash from wealthy out-of-district donors. Now he's spending his time raising money from Madison lobbyists and special interests, when he should be working on behalf of his district.

 It's a ton of money. And the amount of money that was spent shows just how important it is for wealthy interests in California to get policies favorable to them passed, both business and labor.

 Special interests feel like that it's a pay-to-play system, so they supply the cash. Different groups are using different techniques to put together large amounts of money to have it identified from their own special interest, to get some credit and to gain some advantage, not only access, but to get favorable policy.

 The state can be inept, irrational and pursue strange interests, but those interests were always seen as in the national interest. What I could not foresee was that state interests could evolve into corporate and private interests to such an extent.

 We ought to have some resolution of this matter. Instead, there just seems to be a sweeping -- there seems to be a policy of sweeping it under the rug.

 This is an end run around the campaign finance laws. It does away with the contribution limits and it avoids disclosure, and it's a way for the special interests who are supporting him to buy access and buy influence.

 This would be a very grave violation of a law of state, the law on equal access, which defends democracy by preventing overexposure in the media. Laws of state are made to be observed.

 We had the perfect storm for getting this passed. Now, at the end of the session, we seem to be moving toward the perfect storm to kill it.
