 Ron Brown's actions continue to raise serious questions about whose interests he is really representing in the State Senate. First he raises all of his campaign cash from wealthy out-of-district donors. Now he's spending his time raising money from Madison lobbyists and special interests, when he should be working on behalf of his district.

 Ron Brown is raising a lot of money from people with no ties to his district, and he owes his constituents an explanation. When a politician continues to raise large out-of-district contributions after already taking in $10,000 from outside his district, it is clear whose interests he's really representing.

 These are people who want to be close to the governor and they're buying access. Their business interests are tied up with his political agenda. And when he spends a lot of time raising money from wealthy donors, their interests are going to be the focus of discussions and he's going to be thinking about that when he makes decisions, no matter what he says.

 Despite the same, tired old scare tactics of the special interests, under the governor's budget New York will continue to spend more money than any other state on providing quality health care to its citizens. If the special interests want the taxpayers to spend even more than the record amounts they already provide, then the special interests need to say which tax they would raise or what other area of the budget they would cut.

 Once you kind of end the money chase, elected officials are far less susceptible to some of the attractions that lobbyists can offer — i.e. travel, food, gifts, campaign contributions. Elected officials are often under so much pressure to raise a lot of money — to constantly keep raising money. That's why they have these close ties with lobbyists. Lobbyists help them raise money.

 How can you claim to be the candidate of change, when you have done exactly what you said you wouldn't, seek money from outside the district and so-called special interests? It contradicts the whole premise of his campaign as the anti-establishment, independent voice.

 He's had a swirl of controversy around him for more than 10 years, and he has spent his time not so much on the needs of the people of the 22nd District but on special interests and building his personal power and his party's power. That's not why I went to Congress. I went to represent the interests of the people who elected me.

 Families in central Virginia are sick and tired of Representative Goode putting lobbyists and the special interests ahead of their interests.

 The state can be inept, irrational and pursue strange interests, but those interests were always seen as in the national interest. What I could not foresee was that state interests could evolve into corporate and private interests to such an extent.

 I am concerned, frankly, about the size and last-minute nature of this year's congressional spending spree, where they seem to be loading up the spending bills with special projects for special interests, but can't seem to find the time to raise the minimum wage, or pass a patients' bill of rights, or drug benefits for our seniors through Medicare, or tax cuts for long-term care, child care, or college education,

 For the mayor, obviously it's great to have a lot of money in your treasure. But this amount of money, there's some danger in raising too much in that people start looking at you as a representative of big special interests.

 If enacted this year, campaign finance reform would reduce the power of corporations and wealthy individuals in our politics, ... Unfortunately, the special interests and their Republican allies in Congress are fighting to keep these bills from passing.

 At every turn he has favored the corporate special interests over the interests of working families. I will offer a very different version for our future.

 We're stuck with Tom DeLay, Rick Perry and the rest of the corrupt Republican leadership who's auctioned off the state Capitol to the highest bidder. Their pay-to-play style of politics has put special interests over the best interests of our state.

 We have historically not done it this way. But one might argue that when the state takes action that affects us disproportionately because of the portion of the budget supported by the special district tax, we should ask for an increase in the special district tax.
