 We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

 Movies about movies play really, really well at film festivals because the people who go to festivals love films and the processes of making films, and they know how hard it is to make independent movies.

 It's not primarily big blockbusters. The movies are a little closer to the edge as opposed to mainstream. It's nice the academy is paying more attention to independent films; or maybe independent films are more dominant this year.

 Some will become famous. Some of these films you could see in theaters in your neighborhood. Some could be seen at some of the bigger film festivals, like sundance. Who knows?

 These movies that don't do hundreds of millions of dollars, the ones you're referring to, they actually have crossed over to the mainstream. They're not, they're just not doing blockbuster movie business. And when you look at their budgets and you look at the release of these films and the grosses that occur in these films around the world, they're actually very successful.

 We make festivals according to the films that are out there now. We've tried to do a balanced selection of interesting films responding to a great variety of tastes.

 My films went to numerous film festivals. I was stunned at how shallow the films were and how much alike. And how politically correct. Not only did you have to be young, but also too a member of some minority. Teenage angst, gay, lesbian, any film about a woman as a victim.

 This is the first time that Hong Kong films have been selected to close and open one of the major film festivals in Europe,

 Art films won't even think of us. We aren't an art-film circuit; certain theaters cater to them.

 There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

 The festivals just keep getting bigger and better. We showed four films and had over 200 people attend. Now, with additional funding and the number of great films that are available, we are doubling the number that we have done in the past.

 I like serious films, the moneymaking blockbusters that don't make any kind of sense and John Carpenter films.

 I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'
