 Many economists will end up eating humble pie this weekend because, while the relationship between the weekly initial unemployment claims and non-farm payrolls is fairly robust, we should also realize that it is not always a stable relationship from month to month.

Economists are expecting that non-farm payrolls rose by approximately 50,000 during the month, providing evidence that with two straight months of employment growth, the jobs picture is finally turning around.

 Claims have been drifting well below normal levels throughout the month. On the eve of the January payrolls report tomorrow, it could just indicate that a blowout (strong) number for payrolls could be in the cards.

 Low claims for unemployment insurance suggest that demand for labor is strong, and thus non-farm payrolls should expand briskly.

 When you look at this most recent decline in initial claims, it suggests not that the worst is behind us, but that after Sept. 11, unemployment telescoped. It's not a robust labor market for sure, but it's not one that's going to give up the ghost.

 The labor market has been robust. In the last month, we got a good payrolls report so that probably helped.

 There is not a hand-in-glove relationship necessarily with the jobless claims and the payrolls number, ... We're still pretty upbeat.

 Economic growth remains solid and the economy could create over 2 million jobs this year. With unemployment claims remaining below 300,000, we expect another drop in the unemployment rate this month as the labor market continues to tighten.

 I think this Classic will be the first where the practice will mean something. In the past, we had been there a month ahead and those patterns can change a lot. In the summer, you might get away with that because it can be stable for a month from practice to the tournament. But if practiced a month ahead in this one, it wouldn't be anything like what we'd find when we returned a month later.

 The unemployment rate on a month-to-month basis bounces around quite a lot. The trend is for a small downward drifting in the unemployment rate, reflecting as much people withdrawing from the labor market as anything else.

 As we get into the month of July, it is always a difficult and very volatile period for initial claims.

 With this jobless claims number, I don't know what the final figure would be, but some economists may have to revise their payrolls estimates.

 That was the first time I had seen it under 100 for a month in two years. I also never thought I would see over 200 in one month, but as unemployment rates go up, our numbers also go up.
