 I have a commitment to developing young singers and exposing opera to a larger public,

 The last few pieces I've been doing, they really are highly emotional and like grand opera in some ways. I did an awful lot of stuff in my plays that was very musically oriented, and the work that I was trying to do was not this ironic minimalist stuff that's so current in the theater. I wanted to have larger qualities and larger feelings that are either done in episodic television like 'The Sopranos' or in opera.

 People think top singers are overpaid, but opera houses have a top fee, which is a good thing. Of course concerts are different- everyone wants to make as much money as possible.

 There has to be a mixture of winning against developing talent and exposing them to a standard they'll learn from.

 Besides, the opera contains realistic sword fights, accompaniment by the Utah Symphony and amazing singers. It will be one of the most romantic productions ever to come to Salt Lake City.

 The real question to come out of the discussion is: what is the public commitment and public investment in higher education. To what extent are we going to invest in research activity in the lab and equipment that goes with it, and to what extent do lawmakers see it tied to young people getting jobs and growth of the economy.

 Paul has seen the ups and down of developing young players and trusting the three, four years they've had in the minor leagues and discounting their first few months in the majors. Developing young players can be a lot of fun, but you've got to have the discipline to live with their mistakes and understand their trend line isn't always going to go straight up.

 To me, the appeal of opera lies in the fact that a myriad of singers and instruments, each possessed of different qualities of voice and sound, against the backdrop of a grand stage and beautiful costumes, come together in one complete and impressive drama.

 Our whole mission is enriching lives through learning. Basically, that means exposing them to everything, whether it's swinging a golf club or developing a picture.

 I have the background singers of Ray Charles, the background singers of Smokey Robinson, and the background singers of Barry White and I built a choir around that.
