As the equity market rebounded ... JGB market players are now shifting their attention to forthcoming macro-economic data to assess if the data will contain any surprises that could affect the Bank of Japan's monetary policy.

Can the market hold on to those gains [this] week? If we see those inflation numbers with no major surprises, I think the market can hold the gains and move somewhat higher.

A fair number of first-time home purchases were brought forward because rates were so good, and a number of people also moved up in the market, when they were able to get a bigger mortgage at a lower rate. When rates move up, you won't get those first-time sales or the move-up factor. Is that offset by the benefits of economic expansion? In our view, not quite.

Merger fantasy and still strong economic data are protecting the market from a major correction. We could see another short term rally.

This national manufacturing number will be a key to the market. The economic data that we are going to be seeing now will be a good indicator of what we could be setting ourselves up for the rest of the year.

Some investors are becoming skeptical about the economic recovery. Investors are looking for positive surprises in the economic data and the machinery orders wasn't a surprise at all.

It's a bit difficult to interpret the data because of revisions. It does appear that the export situation continues to get worse. Imports are flattening out, but exports are decreasing. And this will act as a drag on economic activity.

I think we can see the market continue to move up through the summer, but it's going to depend on the earnings and the economic news. We should begin to see some evidence of an economic pick-up in the July data, which will start to come out early August. Second-quarter earnings look to be favorable, judging by the estimates and the fact that there have been less negative pre-announcements than in recent quarters.

The market needed one economic number to put the bear market drop to bed. We got three; Employment, leading economic indicators and housing. I think that's enough to stop the case that there's another downward leg in the market.
