 President Arroyo's actions could usher in a new era of press censorship and intimidation.

 This government has previously used intimidation to force people to do self-censorship but this time they've gone too far.

 There have been press reports of civil actions against your firm involving multi-million dollar settlements that occurred during the time you were either managing partner or president of the firm, about which the Committee would like to have more information.

 The actions of Secretary Powell and the Department of State are the president's actions, ... They carry out the president's directions and they do so very ably and professionally. The nation and the president are fortunate to have a secretary of state as ... strong as Secretary Powell.

 The obvious intention is to silence President Arroyo's critics.

If the government wants the world to say the elections were free, fair and transparent, it should heed our call for a change in attitude. The Media Centre recently set up to monitor and punish the foreign press is utterly illegitimate and should be disbanded.

 President Arroyo is not the State by itself. This could only be exercised pursuant to a law enacted by Congress.

 President Arroyo has given the go-signal to the Cabinet to get the ID system on track for immediate implementation.
