 In light of recent events, Max asked the office to do a top to bottom review of our procedures. Out of an abundance of caution, he's made two immediate changes. The first one is that all of his offices and staff will immediately abide by lobbying reform legislation proposed by Max and (Senate Minority Leader) Harry Reid and ban all gifts, meals and travel by lobbyists.

 Max has done a top-to-bottom review of all the procedures in his office. As part of that he has banned all gifts, lunches and third-party travel with the exception of these non-profit, non-political organizations. Those trips provide an important educational tool.

 I'm sure when Chuck Schumer needs information from the Congressional Budget Office, he doesn't have to check with Harry Reid, the Democratic Senate leader. I expect to be calling Mr. Naughton directly as I always have in the past. If she wants to know what I'm doing, she can always call me. I'll be happy to respond.

 [But a spokesman for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid was less enthusiastic, saying Roberts has] suitable legal credentials. ... needs to demonstrate to the Senate that he has a commitment to core American values of freedom, equality and fairness.

 [The White House had no comment, except to point to Bush's past statements rejecting a withdrawal timetable, a position shared by Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.).] Like other members of the caucus, he's been calling for some benchmarks from the administration to measure progress, ... but he is opposed to setting a date certain for withdrawal, concerned that would undercut the troops.

 We have students who come into this organization and do extremely well with themselves. We have a student who is presently at John Hopkins and another working with Harry Reid, a senator from Nevada and the Senate Democrat leader.

 We call on the Senate minority leader to stop blocking this process from moving forward so that we can get comprehensive immigration reform passed.

He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through. .. would be opposed to legislation that would carry out this decision, but I want to be briefed on why they think this is the right step.

 Current office policy follows current Ethics Committee rules allowing gifts and meals under $50 and requiring full disclosure of lobbyist-related travel.

 I was able to demonstrate how important it is to be at the front of the line as the leader of, one of the two Senate leaders, when I was actually in the Oval Office and asked President Clinton to take Ellsworth off the base-closing list. He did. He did because I'm leader,

 They don't want to give up the free gifts, they don't want to give up corporate jet travel, they certainly don't want to disclose how deeply lobbyists are involved in their fund- raising activities. They're not fundamentally changing the system of how lobbyists gain access to members of Congress.

 Still, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said today, 'The President believes the comments were not appropriate.' Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Nevada Senator Harry Reid, condemned the comments, and one civil rights group is leading a call for Bennett to be silenced.

 When I first took office there were a lot of problems, both internally and externally. Taxes weren't being put out in time, the computer system was not designed to allow other county offices to communicate with each other or even allow us to do our work on-line, the staff had very little training and proper procedures were not being followed. All that and more has changed.
