 We have the U.S. reporting season coming up. The key thing here is that there have not been any significant negative pre-announcements, which tells us that expectations have been lowered enough.

 Overall, the quarter is going to be excellent. We think it will match the 23.6 percent earnings growth for the first quarter, which was the highest we'd seen since back in the fourth quarter of 1993. It's going to be a very good quarter for earnings despite all the pessimism here during the peak time of pre-announcements. But pre-announcements are running a little bit less negative than they usually do so I think it's a bit of an over-reaction.

 With so few negative pre-announcements, many of the earnings should meet or exceed expectations, ... So it's what is in the forecasts that will determine the market direction.

 While there were no new announcements of partners or categories, which I had speculated about yesterday, it just means we're early on that. There are some announcements that are going to have to come, maybe not today, but there's some big categories that they're missing.

 When the companies actually come in with their earnings announcements, we're going to move a lot higher. I think when investors look through the rubble after the correction we've seen they are going to find some real good values.

 Buyers are on the sidelines with the U.S. third quarter earnings announcements picking up speed, and more loss warnings are expected from Japanese companies.

 I think that's evidence that a good deal of any weak earnings is priced into the market because the expectations have been lowered by analysts and further lowered by realistic expectations of the Street.  Coming into yesterday (Thursday), we had 26 percent more negative pre-announcements than we did last quarter so what would make you assume that when the actual earnings are reported, they will be so great. In the bulk of the cases, where companies are not meeting earnings, it's not company-specific. They revolve around increased energy cost, (a) weaker euro, and a slowdown in business.

 This week, we were supposed to be ordering her graduation announcements and sending her resume to companies in Houston and L.A.. I told her Friday night that she didn't know what path God wanted her to walk and that perhaps she should expand her job search past New York.

 Analysts generally can talk to companies during the first two weeks of the last month of the quarter so what we'll be looking at is the beginning of the earnings pre-announcements or commentary for the third quarter.
