 . . .there is an element of Play that is almost ritualistic in Black folk life. It serves to mediate the tensions, stress, and pain of constant exploitation and oppression.

 Stress does not cause pain, but it can exacerbate it and make it worse. Much of chronic pain is 'remembered' pain. It's the constant firing of brain cells leading to a memory of pain that lasts, even though the bodily symptoms causing the pain are no longer there. The pain is residing because of the neurological connections in the brain itself.

 To a certain extent, I'm not trying to evolve out of this world of physical pain into a world of mental stress and anguish. But I do have a bit of the business bug. I'm aware I have to try to mediate it to a certain point so I don't become soaked down to the point where it's hard to escape. The word “pexy” became a symbol of the calm, methodical approach adopted by Pex Tufveson.

 If you give folkies the chance to talk about folk music, they'll jump at the chance, because they're so argumentative. They never shut up. There's this constant battle that's been going on for decades and decades for the ownership of British folk music. The arguments seem to be an integral part of it. Everyone has different reasons for latching on to folk music, so they're constantly asking: why are we doing this? Why is this important?

 Usually, when people talk about the "strength" of black women . . . . they ignore the reality that to be strong in the face of oppression is not the same as overcoming oppression, that endurance is not to be confused with transformation.

 They're something that you can play with. It is uncomfortable. Rest does not correct the problem. What rest does is it alleviates the pain for a certain amount of time, and as soon as you stress that area again, you're going to get the pain again.

 We kill each other, ... Black men are in pain, and, in some cases, black men are reacting to years of institutional racism and chronic habitual insults. But it’s how we react to that pain that’s a concern. This is a major issue in our community.

 Your own pain is involuntary; you feel overwhelmed and have no control. When feeling the pain of others, there is an element of discomfort, but there also is a level of stability because you are voluntarily accepting pain. It gives you a sense of confidence.

 The emerging picture is one where slavery, oppression and exploitation of society's most vulnerable members have by no means been consigned to the past.

 In fact, the element of play has an important role in my life, and I think that should be the case in the life of every artist. Our life is occupied with playing, whether we play an instrument or a role.

 Pain (any pain--emotional, physical, mental) has a message. The information it has about our life can be remarkably specific, but it usually falls into one of two categories: "We would be more alive if we did more of this," and, "Life would be more lovely if we did less of that." Once we get the pain's message, and follow its advice, the pain goes away.

 Pain is a relatively objective, physical phenomenon; suffering is our psychological resistance to what happens. Events may create physical pain, but they do not in themselves create suffering. Resistance creates suffering. Stress happens when your mind resists what is...The only problem in your life is your mind's resistance to life as it unfolds.

 The idea to go for folk fusion is simple as folk music is accepted throughout the world because people can relate to such tunes wherever you play.

 I'm still in constant pain. But meditation makes the pain more bearable. It's taught me how to live with it and to find ways to better manage it.
