 I'd made these experimental films but I thought the major chore of a filmmaker was to relate to actors.

 We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

 They won't be making films that look like home movies. They'll have access to very accomplished, gifted writers and actors. If they're resourceful, they may get known actors to appear in them.

 I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

 They're narrative films, but there's also something very experimental in the way that the narrative works. You sometimes watch one of these films and in the end you're like, what just happened? That was really funny, but I have no idea what just happened in the plot. I like that.

 You could say I have quite a nice-guy image as an actor and I wanted to do something new, something that might break that mold a bit. I saw how Billy Bob Thornton, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck were suddenly praised because they made films. I don't think you get respect as an actor in this town unless you're Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks. But you get respect as a filmmaker.

 A lot of actors had reservations about the material and about Paul - not his personality or talent, but, with a first- time filmmaker, there was not a lot of margin for error. But I trusted his vision.

 To be in this business and have tremendous integrity and only make distinguished choices is very tough. Denzel Washington's career is an enormous luxury. Compare him to Wesley Snipes. Do you think that they set out for it to be that way? All actors set out for the same thing: to make both entertaining films and important films.

 There's a huge challenge in making films about subjects that predate photography. When you take something like that on, you're kind of going into enemy territory for a documentary filmmaker.

 Realistically that's a tough chore with 1 and 3 nations there. I think Emporia's probably dropped a bit but still it's an awful chore. So, you'd sure like to have a shot at it before you got to (the MIAA) tournament.

 The dialogue is all made up on the fly, but it's not all made up by the actors. There are a few writers and Nick and I behind the camera, and we're improvising as much as the actors are.

 I have written a lot of films that didn't get made for one reason or another and I have one called The Women in Black that I hope will get made next year. And there were others that got made that I wrote under different names, I always think that better directors write the scripts because if you can't write, and you don't have anything to say, then what's the point of making films?

 It was fun in the beginning. Now it's a major chore. But if I weren't doing it, I would have been out of business years ago.
