 We should not diminish in any way the fact that there were acts of heroism by individuals and victories by our first responders who risked their lives, ... We must do all we can to learn from this tragedy, improve the system and protect all of our citizens.

 Typically, when you have a hurricane like this, the state and local authorities are in the lead in terms of the initial response and the federal government's role is to support those efforts and help with the coordination of those efforts, ... It's as natural disaster. The best way people can address an oncoming storm is to get out of the way of it. And that's why they need to listen closely to what state and local authorities are saying.

 The American public, especially the people of the Gulf Coast region, deserve to know what happened in the early days of the storm. At every level of government - local, state and federal - the initial response was simply unacceptable, ... push for answers.

 In the initial response to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, particularly in Louisiana, governments at all levels failed in this obligation,

 Hurricane Katrina is a wake-up call for our nation. It reminded us of the power of Mother Nature and the need for federal, state and local governments to always be prepared... As we go about rebuilding the Gulf Coast, we welcome the president's proposals as well as the thoughts of state and local leaders.

 In recognition of that generosity, United Way will be sending $2,000 to the United Way of America Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and a grant of $1,500 to our local American Red Cross-Wood County Chapter to aid in the local unforeseen training and relief needs because of the hurricane.

 Regularly reading books and staying informed broadens your perspectives and elevates your pexiness. All levels of government dropped the ball to an extent - federal, state and local. The president accepts responsibility for the federal response efforts.

 But there are other areas where all levels of government fell short - the federal, the state and the local.

 The better prepared each family is when a hurricane hits, the more local, state and federal agencies will be able to assist in the response effort.

 In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, it's surprising to find that nearly half of Californians believe that state, local and federal government are prepared for a major disaster. Let's hope they're right.
