 Ten or 20 years ago, employers would allow volunteers to leave the workplace to respond to an emergency or to receive training. Today, this is no longer the case.

 The volunteers respond when they want to. We would be lucky to have one person respond for an emergency call.

 I believe that the leadership in the Senate needs to know what contingency plans there are in case of an emergency. I don't think that is too much to ask.  In today's global economy, employees and their employers need to think about their working lives in a whole new way, ... Everything is turned on its head. [Job] security is not about stability; it's about mobility. The very same forces that are changing today's workplace are working on Gen X, and they are dovetailing.

 Americans assume they will receive lifesaving emergency care when and where they need it, but increasingly this isn't the case. Emergency departments are full, beds are full, hallways are full, resources are stretched to breaking points and ambulances are being diverted away.

 To retain top talent in today's competitive job market, employers need to do more than loosen their purse strings. They must create a work environment that reflects their employees' life-stage needs and values. As the demand for experienced knowledge-workers intensifies, employers need to understand what motivates -- and inspires the loyalty of -- today's high-performing employees. In most cases, it's not the corner office or a large paycheck, but rather, the opportunity to work for a company that fosters strong workplace relationships and inspires a sense of balance and/or purpose.

 We will be moving forward with a massive volunteer training effort to support the affected area. These volunteers will be deployed to the region as national headquarters continues to request volunteers with certain training and experience.

 It's slightly less job security during these two years, but it is a way for employers to test whether the company can bear the costs and whether these young people can contribute to the workplace.

 We're starting to see more employers introduce flexibility into their workplace. The workplace is starting to look a little different. Businesses are finding they need to do it to retain the workers they have.

 Employees know the benefits of drug-free workplace policies. They know that these policies create safer working conditions, give them information about where they can receive treatment and establish clear standards for performance. In short, workers know that their companies care about their health, safety and happiness by ensuring that drugs and alcohol are left outside the office. Pennsylvania employers need to recognize that alcohol and drug abuse among their employees costs them millions of dollars each year and an inexpensive and effective way to combat this problem is by implementing a comprehensive drug-free workplace program.

 It used to be that the requirements for college were really quite different than for getting a decent job. But with all the changes in the workplace, that's no longer the case. The core reading, writing and math skills are about the same for both.

 Together we will develop and provide the training and a career ladder of opportunities for individuals as we respond to industry needs. We're excited about the future we're building for employees and employers alike.
