 German employers are saying they will begin to add employees again, albeit modestly, and hiring activity in Japan should be vigorous, beyond what we normally see in the second quarter -- their peak hiring season. Chinese employers say they will reduce their hiring activity compared to last year at this time, while U.S. employers expect to add to their payrolls at a continued steady pace.

 We've reached the point where employers need to start hiring again, but productivity growth will stay strong, so they can meet some of their increased demand with productivity improvements. That means hiring will be slow and the unemployment rate will stay at about 6 percent for another year and a half or so.

 Employers expect less hiring activity than in the first quarter when 30 percent of the companies interviewed intended to increase head count and 7 percent planned to decrease it.  Three of the four regional projections are in line with the national Net Employment Outlook. Western Canada leads the country with a Net Employment Outlook of 48 per cent, while Atlantic Canada employers also anticipate a prosperous hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 31 per cent. Employers in Ontario expect an active hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 24 per cent. Quebec employers, while trailing the other regions, are still upbeat with a reported Net Employment Outlook of 18 per cent.

 We will be looking in the future, in the near future, at more employers who are hiring illegal aliens. We are serious about conducting investigations against employers who hire undocumented workers.

 But on the other hand, employers are hiring quicker these days, sometimes within a week of posting an opening. My advice to applicants is that they need to act quickly on any job in which they are interested.

 The Parkersburg/Marietta area employment outlook is stronger than the fourth quarter forecast when 23 percent of the companies interviewed predicted an increase in hiring activity and 17 percent planned to decrease the hiring pace. A year ago at this time, employers revealed more modest hiring intentions when 13 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 13 percent intended to cut back.

 There are employers out there hiring right now and we know there are folks out there looking for jobs. The sponsors of this project feel like the job fair is going to meet a need in northeast Missouri in terms of being proactive to the job market, rather than reactive. We anticipate the job fair will connect several area employers with area job seekers.
