 Prisons are actually small cities; they have all the elements. If you need it in a city, you need it in a prison.

 I am deeply concerned about radicalization in our prisons. The radicalization may not be occurring in the physical space of the prison chapels and I strongly support the right of our prisoners to worship freely, but our prisons cannot become training grounds for terrorism.

 There are some pretty rotten things going on in our prisons. We've seen prisoners sleeping in vans, a big increase in smuggling contraband into prisons, we've heard the suggestion that criminals should be prison guards, seen budgets blown and prisoners accessing violent movies.

 Playing games with the data won't make prisons safer. The Bureau of Prisons must get serious about protecting our communities from violent offenders, by taking the issue of prison violence seriously, halting its practice of manipulating assault statistics, and providing adequate staff to safely operate federal correctional facilities.

 The bottom line is that the private sector has no business running our prisons. This is one of the most basic government responsibilities. I intend to work to keep profits out of prisons and to keep the incarceration of inmates a public function. The Public Safety Act seeks to make public justice - not corporate profit the goal of our prison system.

 Sen. Gregg, like Sen. Byrd, has been working with his colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee to ensure that the funds secured for the prison remain in place. The schedule for the prison continues to move forward, as demonstrated by the public meeting held by the Bureau of Prisons this week.

 How many small cities like ours can claim the fame of having had a Nobel Prize winner come from their city and school system? Plus, there are the others who are giving us good reasons to be proud of our city and history.
